Worked for them 2 years and met my husband in Indiana... so I guess my sorority got me my husband!</p> <p>My dad died while I was rushing (or "going through recruitment"... after working at NHQ I should know better!) and it was the only thing that held me together when I got back to school. My parents went to large southern universities - they both did it - so I was 'encouraged'. It was fun in a lot of ways, and not for me in many others. No frats there :)</p> <p>I was in a sorority, but it wasn't a big deal. They weren't residential, and it just wasn't a big part of my life, though I liked the chance to get to meet people I wouldn't have met otherwise, including upperclass(wo)men. I think something like 50% of women at my alma mater were in sororities when I was there, and I'm sure it was a big deal for some of them, but I kind of forget about it when I think about my undergrad experience. There was one huge building with suites for each sorority that had a foyer, meeting room, and kitchen. It was fun at the time and I don't regret joining, but I look back now and think how ridiculous it all was. I certainly don't consider myself a 'sister for life', nor do I care about any alumni activities. I will encourage our LOs to rush.</p> <p>I honestly think it is a reason we have so many friends from undergrad. At a wedding last weekend, 30+ frat guys (and then their wives) traveled for it. And this is 8 years after graduation. Having shared friend group helps maintain the friendships despite time/distance. </p> <p>Some of my besties (from college) weren't in sororities and I've noticed that they don't have as many undergrad friendships that they maintain. It just takes so much work to keep up long distance friendship. When I talk to X and she has recently spoke to Y and Z - I get the update and feel close to Y and Z still.
