In the NHS, they make you wait 24 hours after your waters break to give your body a chance to go into labor on it's own. I didn't, so I got Cervadil followed by Pitocin 6 hours later. I was 3 cms dilated for like 2 weeks, so he thought he could just break my water and I wouldn't need any meds.
