Check your Bishop Score--that's a way better predictor of whether a C-section is probable and of how ready your body is. Your doc will know what you mean if you ask about it, or you can google it. It brings into consideration way more than just dilation. I was only dilated to a 1.5 when I was induced at 40+5, but my Bishop Score was 8 (favorable for induction) and I only needed pitocin, no cervadil, and had a baby in my arms 9 hours later, delivered vaginally.

@jholler25: :) that's great! I know you have Harper in mind as well and as i said before i do not blame you for wanting your husband to be present. this is a special circumstance. No matter what i just hope for a healthy happy outcome.

@sloaneandpuffy: I always had a similar view until I was faced with waiting to go into labor and my husband possibly not being here. Or only being here for a day or 2 and then off to work for 3 weeks. This is our first, and that is just UNIMAGINEABLE to me, so I'm just going to move forward with the induction and trust my doctor to do what's best for her! Maybe I'll get lucky and she'll come early on her own!

I know someone who was induced under similar circumstances and the baby was TINY. I mean, she's fine, although she couldn't latch and I think she never could. But, I think there's a reason babies bake the amount of time that they bake, which may be a miscalculated due date or whatever.

@MrsMccarthy: I know where it comes from:) I think I'm going to talk to my dr about trying to induce with a drug other than Pitocin, since affecting fetal heart rate seems to be a trend from a lot of ladies' experience. And then go from there.

I have researched it a lot over the past few days, and I'm not a doctor, but it does seem like whatever is done, vaginal/c-section/induction/etc, there are freak outcomes and perfect outcomes in all scenarios. So I think that what's best for me is definitely an induction to make sure we maximize the time we have with DH, and then just try to do the best for Harper from there. I think this is where, as mothers, we have to REALLY trust our doctors, and I really do trust mine. So whether we induce with prepidil and cervidil, or something else other than pitocin, I am going to start there and just hope that I'm one of the "Perfect Outcomes" where everything goes as it should. And if I'm not, then I know my doctor will have a backup plan!

And I will check out the Bus of Being Born! I've always wanted to see it!

Did you see The Business of Being Born? A lot of people say they feel it is scewed one way but i highly disagree. It ends in the director needing an emergency c-section and they even say it's about understanding birth and then having the birth that YOU want. I think you should see it, it's on netflix, just to give you a bit of an idea of what to expect on both sides. THAT and i would also defer your decision until you can take a childbirth class and learn more about the details of all procedures. Maybe little Harper will even save you guys this tough choice by coming early on her own. you never know. either way it is not my place but i would highly recommend avoiding an elective c-section if you can. even induction is better to try first. it's MAJOR surgery that can affect the health of both you and your baby.

DH was a ten pounder, and his five foot nothing mother delivered him vaginally no problem, said he was one of the easiest of her six! But DH's brothers wife had a terrible time delivering her ten pounder, her pelvis clearly wasn't the right shape for him and she had a year of physiotherapy trying to get over it. She demanded an elective section for baby 2, and got it.

Fingers crossed your babies decide to come at a nice date for them and you, and that things work out so your Dh has as much time home with you as possible!

I wasn't induced but they gave me a form of pitocin to speed things up after the epidural and the twins' heartbeats slowed down, it really must be a fairly common side effect of the stuff. My section was fine, but an infection in the wound a while after was great fun. Seven weeks pp now, and beginning to feel like I'm properly recovering now.

@zippyleaf: good to hear that you were able to deliver naturally with a big baby! i hope i can to! i am high risk due to a bloood clotting disorder, (inudction can be safer for me and babes) so that will also be taken into consideration with doing an induction (if it comes down to that). my primarly concern is to get him here healthy :)

@stargal: Please don't induce because of size. My daughter was 10lbs 8oz and 22 inches long, born vaginally at 40+6. Your body can handle it. Here in England, they weren't going to let me be induced until 42 weeks even though they knew she was going to be very big. Ultrasounds are not really accurate for sizing.

Just please try to keep your baby in till at least 39 weeks if all is well. C sections and inductions can cause problems it's true but i understand you wanting your Hubby there for the day. That said many studies have shown that babies born before 39 weeks do not do as well academically as babies who make it longer and can have other issues.

Because of how far she lived from the hospital and how quickly her first daughter came my SIL had a scheduled induction with her second. She said it was a breeze...she progressed at a steady rate and was able to rest quite a bit...she had to be woken up to push, and asked for 5 more minutes to snooze!

A friend of ours just had her baby, and she ended up being induced (although it was 12 days after her due date). Even with the Pitocin she only progressed 2 cm in 18 or so hours, the fetal HB was dropping fast, and she started running a high fever, so she ended up with an emergency c-section.

Honestly, as worried as I am about needing to be induced, there's a good chance I might do the same if I were in your position. I can't imagine not having DH there for the birth of our child if there was a way he could be, even if it's not the optimal way.

@stargal: has your OB expressed any concern in babys size or brought up potential induction? Mine didn't bring it up until my 38 week appt where she set the date. They say that the ultrasounds can be off by a pound but my OB didn't want to take the risk and said my cervix was favorable for a induction. Course I definitely tried everything to get her out before the induction date but she was stubborn!

I had an induction at 40weeks + 4 days. It ended in a c-section since the induction failed. I honestly wouldnt choose to go through that again if its possible to avoid it. I hated every minute of it especially the way my body reacted to the spinal shot they gave me for the c-section.

I was induced at 39 weeks due to the size of the baby. I went in at 7:30am, 2cm dilated, Dr broke my water at 8am and they started pitocin right away. I got the epi about an hour later, by 12:30pm I was 10cm! Unfortunately LO was stationed too high so we had to wait to see if she would drop. I started pushing at 4pm and LO was here at 6:14pm. I have heard that there is a higher chance for c-section with a induction so I was very afraid going into the induction. Everything worked out great though.

My SIL however was induced at 37weeks 2 days due to pre-e and had to labor for 27hours before she stop dilating and they had to perform a c-section.

I hope everything works out! I definitely would not have been able to do it without DH there. Do what is best for you and your family!

There's actually a rating scale called the Bishop score that can be used to gage the likely successfulness of an induction. It takes into account a lot of factors like height/weight/dilation/cervix position of the mother and estimated size/condition of the baby to determine if an induction is a good choice for you. I'd suggest you talk with your doctor about your Bishop score as you get further along in your pregnancy, so you can prepare either way.

Personally, I used to be against inductions for anything other than medical reasons. However, with my second pregnancy I had a high Bishop score and my doctor offerred to induce me before my due date. I ended up going into labor before I hit the possible induction date, and I'm not sure I would have done it anyway, but it sure was nice to have the option! Just like every other issue, non-medical inductions aren't necessarily evil; there's a lot of gray area, and you have to make the decision that is best for your family as a whole!

@TurtleDoves: Lol, not weird at all! You are so sweet to think about me! @zipplef is right, it's not so bad because he's only gone 3 weeks at a time, but I just started to panic that if I went over, then he'd miss the whole delivery. But we'll get it figured out and make sure that he's around. He'll jump through hoops to be here, so I'm sure it'll be fine:)

Thanks everyone for contributing your birth stories! I really learned a lot from reading them! When the time comes, I will do what I think is best for us, even though I still don't know what that will be....But I cannot imagine having our first baby with DH gone and him not even meeting her for 3 weeks. That just can't happen, so if it's an induction, that's cool with me, and from there, we'll just have to do what's best for Harper!

I have to agree with @Arden. I have read Ina May's Guide to Childbirth in addition to other research and would never opt for an induction or a c-section unless it was absolutely medically necessary. I definitely think you should do lots of research and take time to weigh your options. I understand that you do not want your DH to miss the birth, but there are serious risks involved with both induction and c-section that in my opinion, shouldn't be taken lightly.

I was induced at 39w7d and had no complications. Admitted at 7:30AM at 2cm dilated and delivered vaginally at 4:54PM. There were an issue with DD's heart rate but that was in relation to interventions that happened too close together (I got my epidural at noon and my OB broke my water around 1PM). After my OB left, DD's heart rate changed so that a whole bunch of nurses came into the room and they gave me oxygen and repositioned me from side to side until DD's heart rate stabilized; to my knowledge there was no concern about an emergency c-section because her rate stabilized in about 15 minutes.

I had a scheduled c-section and it great and i am not more debilitated than a vaginal birth. I'm 3 weeks out and walked almost 4 miles today with LO in the stroller up and down hills. I would have done that walk twice today, but it got too hot out to walk. I was up and walking the morning after. Every birthing method carries risk; do what you and your doctor are comfortable with.

Is it weird that I thought of you the other day and i'm like "What is Jen gonna do?! Where's her DH going to be on her due date?!" I was all concerned about you and wanted to ask you about it but it slipped my mind:)

You know i'm pregnant with my first so I don't have any induction stories of my own but MANY women I know have been induced and didn't end up with a c-section. There are foley bulbs and cervadil (inserted into cervix to dilate it over a 6-hour period), nipple stimulation (with an electric pump), episiotomy and forceps to all help bring baby out without ever using pitocin.

The thing about a c-section is....I think it limits the amount of pregnancies you can have total to 3. I've read that several places but never heard it straight from a doctor's mouth. So, research that.
If you're O.K with that go ahead and schedule the c-section. That's totally your personal choice:) Honestly, I figure they're terrible but in your situation it'll probably be awesome because the pros will out weight the cons more-so than in a typical situation where husband works in town.
*See if your mom can stay a few weeks to help since c-sec will obviously debilitate you more than would a vaginal birth.
**personally I'm pro-induction big time. But that's mainly because our family has big babies so we like to get them out kinda early;) I am all for your plan whatever it may be.

I understand that your situation is tough, but you should probably do a lot more research before you plan an induction or c-section. My Dad was scheduled to be deployed the day I was born (I come from an air-force family), so I get where you are coming from, but this is a really serious decision.

There are some serious risks involved with a c-section especially, and I personally would never plan one unless the life of my baby was in serious danger.

Do some research about the risks and benefits of inductions and c-sections before you make your decision.

We thought DH was going to be deployed when I had C. Last minute, another guy volunteered so he didn't have to go. At least it just 3 weeks and not 6 months, although it definitely sucks either way.

I was induced at 40+4 after my water broke and my body didn't go into labor. I gave birth at a British NHS hospital, so their policy is that they induce 24 hours after your water breaks so that you have the best chance to go into labor on your own. My water broke about 11pm on April 1st. We went to the hospital at about 4am after I was sure that's what was happening because it was just leaking. They sent me home to wait out the 24 hours. I went back in at 8am and got cervadil gel put in at 9:30pm because I wasn't really dilated or effaced. They waited 6 hours for it to work and then started pitocin at about 4am. I got an epidural at the same time they started the drip, which only worked for a few hours. By 6am, my cervix was full effaced. By 9am, I was 2-3cm and the by noon, I was fully dilated. I pushed for an hour and a half before they realized her head was crooked and she wasn't descending properly. In the end, I was given an episiotomy and a forceps delivery. She was born at about 7:30pm.

Pitocin is hardcore and they had my drip up really high. My contractions were right on top of each other with no break for hours. I also did it med-free because I had 2 failed epidurals. I can't really imagine anything more painful.

They offered to give me a c-section early due to her size, but I refused. Personally, electing to have major abdominal surgery is not really something I wanted to do.

I was induced at 41wks and 2cm. I wanted a med free birth very badly, so my OB used a Cook's balloon to help me dilate over night and broke my water in the morning. I got to 5cm and stopped progressing, so they started pitocin. I got to 10cm and actively pushed for 2.5 hours. Then baby's heart rate sky rocketed and my blood pressure dropped, so I had a c-section. It turned out that baby had turned her head and wedged herself into my pelvic bone. She just wasn't ready to make her appearance, and honestly, I hate that I induced before she was ready. We had a pretty rough start, especially with breastfeeding and weight gain, and I can't help but think the induction had something to do with it. I'm not trying to dissuade you - just to give you another perspective. I would likely induce in your situation, too :) I have several friends who were induced and delivered vaginally with no complications.
