We are pretty nervous. I did just get a promotion at work so that will help and with #1 we were paying my medical plus DH had just had a ton of dental work done that we had to pay for out of pocket--so at least we won't have that.

The thought of two in daycare is scary, I haven't asked how much it will cost yet but I am estimating 1100-1200/month at least. DS and LO2 will be 15 months apart so both in diapers is scary too. We got mostly neutral stuff so like you, we'll just need a second monitor, convertible when LO2 is older. I think we are just going to get a rocking chair and bassinet for our master and keep LO2 in there and then move them into the same room at some point.

The expenses when looking at the big picture is definitely scary!

The cost of just one is terrifying! We cant afford daycare (we live in one of the most expensive daycare states) and are going to have to rely on our dear sweet aging parents along with possibly a neighbor that we bartered with for child care. It is nerve wracking. It bums me out too because I am getting started late in life and quite frankly I only have a few years of baby making ability left and at this point I am not sure we can afford another. We have had good luck so far saving money by accepting hand-me-downs and shopping at garage sales and craigslist for next to new items. At a certain point it just hit us that we would be better off being ahead in this game than going into debt to have all new items.

I won't lie, I was nervous about affording our first child, because I was thinking about staying at home and giving up my salary/401k benefits. So, I made a budget and we prioritized the important stuff and downsized the rest. For example, we got a crib from IKEA for $100. Worked just as well as a pricier model.

@wahine08: We won't be having another baby shower but I'm hoping to stock up on diapers/wipes again this time around. We had about 20 bags/boxes with LO and it really took the pressure off when things got tight because we knew we at least had the essentials (I breastfed so that helped!) We don't really get many gifts for the holidays but DH and I do swap gifts. I wouldn't be opposed to scaling back what we normally spend and getting the baby a big ticket item like a crib or dresser.

Definitely!
Right now DH is a WAHD. I don't know how he would do with two kids and two in daycare is out of the question. So while I'd love to have another, we'll revisit in a few years when DS is in school.

We will hold off on number 2 for a little while simply because of the day care costs. The other stuff for baby 2 we would be able to swing pretty easily since we're a double income family. But once you add day care and additional college fund contributions that kid gets expensive

I'm pregnant with our first and I'm nervous about being able to afford one! I know we will be okay, you can always make things work (luckily we're one of the last in our fam to have babes, so we'll get lots of hand me downs) but I think it's really common to have a little anxiety about it.

It shows that you're looking at the big picture, which is a good thing in my opinion and really common! Will you have another baby shower? The holidays will be hitting before you know it too.. maybe get the word out for gift cards to help with some extras!

I'm not going to lie, I'm a bit nervous about being able to afford two babies. LO will be about 19 months when baby #2 arrives so she will likely still be in diapers. We have most of the gear we need but we will still need another convertible car seat for each car, another camera for the monitor, clothes if it's the opposite gender, a crib/dresser, the hospital bill and copay's for the check ups....the list goes on. I know we will make it through I'm just extremely nervous all the sudden. I'm sure this is a common feeling though...were you nervous about being able to afford more than one LO?
