At 39 weeks I was dilated to a 5 and 100% effaced and still had to be induced.

@cvbee: Your labor sounds great because you went from 0-10 quickly!
@petitstrawberry: Fingers crossed:)

@TurtleDoves: Ah, I get what you're saying now. Hmm, it sounds like I might have lucked out with my OB deciding just to go for it (my daughter was only borderline small and the doctor could have sent me home to wait). Ugh, how frustrating to hear "head right there" and then be sent home to wait :(. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that your baby decides to arrive earlier than later (and vaginally :))!

@TurtleDoves: 2 weeks before my due date my water broke. Doc checked me about 3 hours later and I still wasn't dilated, but my contractions just started then. And 3 hours after that I was pushing.

@petitstrawberry: I know I can still give birth vaginally:) but I'm scared because they are saying he's big...so he will be a chunky baby if I go passed 40w and y doctor never induces based on size. In fact-she makes me wait 40&5 before inducing at all:/

I had my last prenatal checkup at 39w6d and was 0cm dilated and 0% effaced. Because my belly was measuring on the small side they did an u/s. Based on the results, the OB decided to have me (medically) induced. I checked in at noon that day, and my daughter was born (vaginally) by 05:30 the next morning, on her exact due date. So hang in there! And even if you end up with an induction, you could still give birth vaginally :).

@TurtleDoves: Well, you're already further along than I was at my first cervical check. I was barely 1 cm at my 40 week check (my doctor said he would be nice and say I was that far). At 40 weeks, 4 days, my water broke and I was only 2cm by the time I got the hospital.

My friend was 39 weeks 1 day and 1cm dilated when she went into labor. So it can go either way.

For my first baby, I was zero dilated at exactly 38 weeks and went into labor two days after. She was born at 38 weeks and 3 days.

In between the appt and her birth though, I was working two, back-to-back 12 hours shifts as a nurse and had very tiring work days (the kind where I barely got to sit down for breaks or meals!), so sometimes I think the stress and all the walking/activity put me into labor. She was 1.5 weeks early

Not dilated at all until 40w, was induced due to pre-e at 40w1d at that point I was dilated 1cm. Being induced wasn't bad, DS was sunny side up and brow-out so similar to @zippylef, I had a vacuum assisted birth but I was able to have him vaginally, as I wanted.

@MrsHotDog: She never gave me a percentage rate per se; she did say she avoids them unless medically necessary and does not like to do inductions (because they pose a bigger chance of c/s). She doesn't like to even discuss them (inductions) until 40+5. So, I trust her but now I have to trust my body:/

I was induced at 40+2. I never dilated and I was absolutely miserable with PUPPPS so my doc suggested it since I had a summer baby in the middle of Texas heat. I did end up with a c-section because my precious daughter tried to come out sideways with her head crooked. If she was in the right position, I have no doubt that I could have pushed her out.

I know it is too late now, but did you ask your doc what her c-section rate is? My doc said hers is 15% so we really tried to avoid a c-section. I even pushed for 3.5 hours.

@TurtleDoves: I had a strange situation. My water broke on it's own at 40+4. I was induced because I didn't go into labor. The induction was a little too successful and I dilated crazy fast. I ended up having a forceps-assisted birth due to her head being crooked in the birth canal and a heart condition, on my part, that prevents me from extended pushing. If her head had been positioned better, I could have and would have had a totally normal, vaginal birth. Don't stress! An induction does NOT automatically mean you will have a c/s.

@zippylef: I'm going to pretend I never saw this post...*cries* Did you end up having to be induced though? I think that is my ultimate worry. If I'm not progressing then the induction might fail, leading to a forced c-section:(

So, I go yesterday to be checked for the first time (big mistake). I was 36w4d and she said this:
- 25% effaced
- 1cm dilated
- "head RIGHT there"
- "more than likely to go until at least your due date" < at least?!

OK, I didn't expect much from my first internal exam and I know dilation has little to nothing to do with when labor will begin....but, she said it herself: "more than likely to go until at least your due date".

So, now I am really upset and wondering....were any of you ladies either not dilated and/or effaced at all but still ended up giving birth ON or BEFORE your due dates?

*Mind you: I am always measuring a few days ahead and from all u/s (total of 4) throughout my pregnancy he has been a hefty baby. So, I really don't want to go over my due date because I want to avoid inductions and *try* for a vaginal.
