It didn't change my behaviour, it just made me not do whatever I was doing in front of them. I think there are better ways to deal with misbehaviour. I was also slapped, for which I still harbor anger and resentment to this day. I am not planning to spank LO. However, if we decide to use spanking as a punishment, it will not be reactionary or out of anger. I will never slap LO. @SweetChic: I agree. For me, the slapping was worse. I always felt like well, if I am the child and I can control my emotions and not reach out and slap someone out of anger/ frustration, I expect my parents to be able to show similar control. There were a few times (with only 1 exception) that I was completely blind-sided by the slap, and was horribly stunned and hurt by the gesture (more emotionally than physically). Both our parents reserved it for extreme cases. I honestly don't know how I feel about it, I would like to say that I will use other forms of punishment for our children, but I'm not going to say there isn't a situation that arises that I might think warrents it, however I hope I'm able to find alternative punishments that work effectively. Every time my dad spanked me; he came into my room afterwards and apologized and cried:( Both my mom and dad grew up with “spankings” (i.e., abuse at times for sure) and never spanked out of anger and never as a later result of behavior (like, spanking us after we got home for something we did an hour before while out in public). We won’t be spanking LO; I just don’t think it’s a lasting, effective form of discipline – except as a fear tactic. I also don't think it's something I could defend to LO later in life while teaching her not to accept violence in her own life or to be violent to anyone else. DH more often than myself. My parents spanked sparingly (I can count on one hand) and it was usually if we did something dangerous. I was beaten until I could fight back and DH's parents never laid a finger on him. We both turned out okay, but I think DH got away with murder as a child and as a result was a real discipline problem, and I had some severe emotional issues I had to work through in my 20's as a result of the abuse. My initial thought is that something in the middle would be appropriate, never spanking out of anger and always as a last resort, final punishment type thing. I got angry and was on top of one of his brothers hitting him and wouldn't stop so I spanked his bottom and sent him to his room. I don't think I would do it again. We're both productive members of society, confident in our worth, abilities, and our parents' love, and have no hang ups about being spanked. That said, I believe there is a huge difference in what is meant when people discuss "spanking" and that makes an incredible impact on how if affects a child. I also think you have to consider each child's personality and what they react best to. When my parents spanked us, they never seemed angry. They always had a discussion with us first about what we did wrong, why it's wrong, and what we could do differently next time. We were also always told that they loved us no matter what and nothing we did would ever change that. I think spanking done this way is a whole different thing than being beaten, being spanked out of anger, or being spanked for every single thing you do. At our house, other methods were attempted first, with a swat being the last resort punishment after several warnings. We will certainly do other methods of discipline first (redirection, choices, taking away privileges, creative punishments that fit the unwanted behavior, etc.), but we will likely spank our kids if we believe that it is appropriate for the child/age/behavior.
