Hahahaha.. no. Once I started showing any hint of independence my Mom cracked down HARD and was very disrespectful of my thoughts and opinions. She still doesn't treat me like an adult!

I will definitely respect my children as their own people and listen to them!

Yes and No, it got better as I got older. I was always a very independent child and my parents recognized that so they caught on if my opinions were acknowledged life was easier for all!

Haha, the question made me lol! Of course not!!

When I got older I got more of a say in the clothes my Mom purchased for me, but that's about it!

Nope. It was really weird.

My dad was in the military and had some expectations that we'd respond like one of his soldiers and my mom, I'm not really sure what it was with her but she invented her own version of who we were and got upset if we didn't mesh with that reality. I remember her talking to me when I was eleven about how it was time I know the truth about Santa Claus, I had no idea where she'd been for the last four or five years.

@mrbee: Accounting and MIS (Management Information Systems). I wanted to be a pediatrician, but they shunned the thought of any Dr program because schooling would be for a long time and I wouldn't marry young (or ever).

@Andrea: I thought about it, but once I got into corporate world and the hubby and I owned our own business, it fell to the way side.

Nope! my parents thought they always made the best parenting decision for me. My dad picked all my classes in HS, my major in college, and even some of my classes the first year of college. It was really sad. Some of their decisions turned out great for me, some, not so much. I had zero social life growing up because it was all about academics!

I don't remember ever being asked my opinion.

I want to find a balance with my kids. I don't think I need to ask their opinion on everything but they should have a voice.

For example, DD is only 2 but I'll let her have an opinion on little things, like picking her own outfits. My mom was telling me that I give her too much freedom because I let her do this. I think that is ridiculous. I buy what I like at the store and then let her pick from within MY selection. The choice is still ultimately controlled by me, but it makes DD happy and lets her practice a life skill.

Yes and no...if it was about something in my own life they had final say, I guess because they felt like they knew best when it came to parenting. But when it came to things like buying a home or a car, they let me decide (yikes), maybe because they thought I understood taste and American culture.

One of the big themes in parenting these days is to really listen to your kids. I don't really think this was a theme for my generation!

Were your opinions listened to and respected growing up? Did things change (or not) when you reached adulthood?
