I'm not at all. My mom's family has been here since they came from England before the Revolutionary War.

DH, however, is only 3rd generation from Italy. His family has a much closer connection to their roots, which I think is awesome.

Nope. My family has been here forever. Not sure which ancestor actually moved to the US it was so long ago. Unfortunately, we don't have any good information on my dad's side and since he's the only one left, we may never know.

I'm 1.5 too. My parents are from Philippines and we immigrated to the US before my 5th birthday. They supposedly spoke Tagalog, English, and Spanish when I was a baby. But I remember going to ESL classes in the 1st grade. I went to pre-school in the Philippines but skipped kindergarten because we were moving around, my father was in the military and we moved around from LA to Florida to relatives in LA before finally settling down.

My parents forced me to speak Tagalog at home and I remember hating it, but I'm really glad they did.

I'm 1.5 too. My mom is Japanese. I was born in Japan but moved to the US when I was 4. We only spoke English at home because my dad doesn't really speak Japanese, which is why my Japanese was not very good until DH and I moved to Tokyo 3 and a half years ago. DH's parents are immigrants from Germany. They came to the US because his dad had a job. DH and all his brothers were born in the US. DH is the only one of his brothers who can speak German.

i'm "2nd-generation"... was born here. although i think that's the asian way of saying it. american american people say that we're the "first generation".... i was born here. hubs came here when he was like 3, so i don't consider that 1.5 generation. i think he's more like 1.75. lol. (i consider those who came around JHS or so is 1.5)... our kids will be 3rd generation.

My parents immigrated here (separately) from the Philippines. They met here, married, and my siblings and I were all born here. DH's story is actually similar, so we're both 2nd generation. Though for hubs, English was the primary language in his home, so the only language he speaks fluently is English.

I am 1.5 generation as well. My parents are immigrants, I came here when I was 7 and I'm a legal resident alien still! (citizenship test is so exp!!)... Korean was my first language and I still speak it fluently. I think our kids will be 3rd generation though since DH is completely "American" and both of us speak English in our household.

I am the 3rd generation born here but my husband was born in Poland and came to the US when he was 20. He never went home until after we were married. I thought it was important for me to meet his family before we were engaged so I went to Poland without him to meet my in-law's and see where he grew up. It was hard since I don't speak Polish and they don't speak English but I am so glad I did it.

@Mrs. Yoyo: I'm definitely more interested in it now that I have a kid. My mom and I are going to start reviewing the family tree during our monthly "grandson visits"

We live a little over an hour away, so once a month I'm going to start driving over and hang out for the day so my parents and grandparents can see Cam.

Hubby's parents immigrated from Thailand.

@lemondrop: Apparently I have an ancestor from the Mayflower. My Grandpa was very into all that. I wish I would have learned more from him about it before he died!

Nope, as my husband likes to tease me, I'm "Mayflower material". He would have been, but his ancestors got on the wrong boat.

My mom is super proud of the geneology, but my husband and I always joke around about it.

Yup, parents were born in Europe, my dad finished high school and went to college in the US, my mom came to the US after marrying my dad. All three of us kids were born in the US.

Now, I live abroad and my son was born abroad, but he is still considered an AMCIT.

DH was born in the states but they didnt speak english at home so he didnt learn until he went to school.

I'm also 1.5. My parents were immigrants and I was born abroad. My parents gave up everything to immigrate to America so we grew up without a lot of money at first. They worked super hard and we ended up ok. My husband and I both grew up similarly and it has definitely affected the way we view money and family. I hope my kids grow up understanding what it means to work and not expect things to be just handed to them (meaning..spoiled!!).

My parents came from Vietnam after the war. I'm 2nd generation (only child)-- I spoke Vietnamese at home, but learned both languages at the same time. My mom is definitely not a "Tiger Mom," but she had some Tigerish tendencies that I plan on using to raise our own child.

My parents are immigrants from Korean and I'm 2nd-gen as I was born in Canada. I hope that I can sacrifice and give to my children in the way my parents did for me. I want my kids to understand that hard work and discipline bring prosperity and that they don't "deserve" anything.

My parents are first generation immigrants and I'm 1.5 generation since my first language was not English and I was born abroad.

But since English is the main language in our household, I guess Charlie and Olive are 3rd generation.

I think having immigrant parents has a big impact on the way you were raised because they left behind everything, most likely to provide a better future for their kids.

Were your parents immigrants? Are you second generation or 1.5 generation like me and Mr. Bee?
