My parents aren't, they all came to the US in the 1850s or so (irish potato famine), with the exception of my grandmother, who came from Poland when she was 6 or so. The only polish things she's retained after all these years are the swear words. When she drops something she curses in polish and it's really cute.

My husband is an immigrant. He is from Ecuador and has lived here for about 2 years. We speak spanish and eat a lot of Ecuadorian food, but don't do much in way of holidays.

Yes, and I was also born aboard and moved to the States at a young age. Growing up, my parents made it a point to only talk to me in Tagalog (Filipino) at home. We celebrated American holidays, but it took awhile before my mom could figure out how to cook a turkey. Christmas was the biggest holiday for us - I was brought up Catholic and they're used to much larger festivities back in their hometown. Plus, my father designed/invented Christmas lights and our house was always lit up.

Yup. Three generations of immigrants in my family.
My grandmother is Dutch and had her children in Ecuador and the US.
My dad was born in Ecuador and had us in the states.
I was born in the states and had my daughter in Canada.
We celebrate a lot of different traditions. It seems we haven't dropped any customs, only added them.

Nope. Most of my family has been in the US since the early 1800s (my mom's side is Native American too). We don't even have any Ellis Island records because they immigrated before it was open!

DH's family came in the late 1800s I believe.

Nope. My family immigrated here at some point (well half. I'm part Native American) but it was so far back we have no records of it. We are not even 100% sure where we come from. Somewhere in Europe...probably Ireland but after a little digging I'm thinking now it may have been England.

It makes me sad That I don't know about my heritage except for my Native American background...and that comes from my mom's dad's family who we don't even associate with.

Yes. I am an immigrant as well. It's definitely made for a difference in how I view things. All of my family lives in other countries. That said, I grew up here in the U.S. so there is a part of me that is very much American, too. I find people are a little confused or surprised because I am both Black and have no discernible accent (it comes out when I want it to).

Yup! But my dad is pretty up to speed and Americanized! Heck, he's more tech savvy then I am. *face palm*. We still lots of Chinese stuff, but they're not crazy superstitious. When we planned our wedding, they didn't care if we implemented Chinese stuff in it or not (we did because I wanted to).

No, but I am.
My Dad was born overseas (Ceylon - now Sri Lanka), but they came back to the UK when he was small.
DH is not - he's a typical American "mutt" as he puts it. We plan on incorporating traditions, holidays and parenting styles from both cultures (obviously there's a lot of overlap but there are still some unique things that I want to ensure are preserved).

I think the most important thing I gleaned from my parents (that may have come from my father's slightly more adventurous family, and my mother growing up in cosmopolitan London of the 1960's) is an openness and acceptance of other cultures and people.

Nope. DHs family has been in the US less than 100 years, his grandparents are first generation Americans. My family has, mostly, been in the states since the colonial era (we were Jamestown colonists!) I can see the differences in family culture just between my family and his, so I can imagine how much different it would be if our grandparents or parents were immigrants.

It creates a lot of tension for him because his mother pulls the "I don't understand English" card when she doesn't get her way or when she starts drama.
