Both DH and I had SAHMs. That didn't affect my decision to be a SAHM though...our moving abroad did.

My mom was a SAHM once she married my dad. My dad and in-laws all WOH. My mom being a SAHM has made me want to at least stay home the first year. It was nice to be able to call home and have my mom bring up a textbook or homework that I accidentally left at home, and still receive full credit for it. She was also able to go on all my field trips with me, etc.

My dad was and always has been a WOHD. My mom has nearly always been a SAHM. One time, when I was a teenager she got a job as a receptionist. But we were all left at home because we were homeschooled and it didn't go very well. She ended up having to quit after only a few months. So ever since she's stayed a SAHM (there are still two kids left at home).

DH's parents are both WOH parents, his mom was SAHM for a little while but they just couldn't afford it.

My mom was a SAHM until my youngest sister went to college, then she went back to work part time teaching. My dad WOH and often had really long hours-- I remember him leaving when we were just sitting down to breakfast and sometimes coming home after we went to bed, just about always after dinner.
H's dad WOH, his mom stayed home until he was in grammar school, then worked part time I think.
It has affected our views-- I can't imagine the logistics of working year round, even after the kids are in school, because I was home with my mom most of the summer, but H went to camps, etc, and loved it, so doesn't see the problem (It's not that I think it's bad, I just can't quite wrap my head around how you make it work).
And, the fact that my dad was gone so much has made me realize it's important that H doesn't have a super long commute or have to work super long hours, because I'd want him to get to see our kids a lot more than that, even if I'm SAH.

DH's parents always worked. My mom was a SAHM in Korea and started working when my lil brother and I were in elem school after we moved to the states.

It def makes me wish that I could SAH for the early years; but, it's not feasible for us and I think for how I am, I'll be a better mom by working instead of being a SAHM.

My mom stayed at home with us. Then she started working for my dad so she was able to set her own hours and still be home with us when we got home from school, volunteer at school, go on field trips, etc.

It def made me want to do the same type of thing for my kids so I'm a SAHM now and would love to have a part time job when the kids go to school so I can still be home when they are.

Until I was 10, both of my parents worked full-time.

Around that age, my mom left the workforce permanently and has been on disability ever since for mental illness.

At the same time, my dad left his corporate job and opened his own business that he ran for the next 10 years (a hobby business with slot cars). My mom helped him run the business.

Since my mom didn't work and my dad had his own business, they were free to attend all of my functions and be present as parents as if they didn't have demanding full-time jobs.

The business closed a few years ago, and then my mom got sick with cancer so my dad stayed out of the work force most of the time and helped her with her medical stuff. He now works again full-time at a wholesaler.

So, there's my long answer.

My parents both worked. My mom was home in the afternoons a few days a week when I was in elementary school when he patient load allowed it.
MIL was a stay-in-bed mom. She didn't work and had two nannies even when DH and his sisters were in school. FIL worked out of home, but didn't have custody.

My mom WOH after my twin brother and I were born until my next brother was born when we were two. Then she was a SAHM until my youngest brother was 3 or so I think (I would have been 10). Then she was a WOHM but luckily her job began allowing people to work from home about 2 years into her job, so since then she has been a WAHM. She loves working at home and complains every time she has to go into the office.

My dad has always worked out of the home.

I believe both my husbands parents have always worked out of the home. His grandmother watched him when he was little.

Both my parents worked out of the home - my 3 sisters and I had a babysitter that was absolutely fabulous and became like a grandmother to us. I was happy to get to stay at home and play with the neighborhood kids rather than have to go to daycare. I did go to playschool when I was 4, though. I'd like to set something like that up for my own kids, but daycare is the norm here in our area now, so maybe no one really does in home care anymore? I'm a teacher so I think it's a good balance between work/home.

My husband had a father who worked out of the home, and his mother stayed at home. So we see the benefits of both types of working/stay at home parents!

My mom was a SAHM until I was in first grade. Then she went to grad school and earned her MBA and became a career woman until she recently retired. My dad worked from home in the evenings when he was at home but traveled a lot during the year.....I don't know how my Mom did everything!
My MIL was a SAHM until DH was 6. Then she went back to work and eventually purchased her own business and still works! My FIL has his own landscaping company and he works 7 days a week!
My MIL and mom don't think I should work until our youngest LO is in the first grade. Dh agrees but I think I want to work...we shall see!

Both my parents worked. Dh's dad worked, and his mom worked part time until he was in high school. She's currently a SAHW.
ETA that my experience originally made me want to continue working after LO was born--until I realized that I didn't really love my job that much. DH does want me to SAH, but I don't know how much that's influenced by the fact that his mom was home a lot.

My dad was a WOH dad, until junior high school when he had to move out of the country for his work. I guess that's still WOH! :) My mom was a SAHM until high school when she started WOH as a language teacher. So for a while there, I was a bit of a latchkey kid.

Bee's mom was a SAH mom in Korea, but started WOH with Bee's Dad when they moved to the states when Bee was young.

So we both experienced SAH and WOH parents. I think it's made us both pretty flexible about whether or not we should work or stay home as parents.

Were your parents Stay At Home moms/dads? What about your SO's parents? Did your experiences color your decision to stay at home or work?
