@Mrs. Pen: @locavore_mama: She did try to eat them at first. I just kept telling her no eat and she eventually stopped trying. I have some black beans and chickpeas. First we usually pour them into two separate bowls and she likes to run her fingers through them. Then we transfer beans from one bowl to the next using measuring spoons. I try to get her to separate the black and chickpeas but she doesn't do that yet. We also make shake bottles and she likes to put the beans inside and then she has an instrument.

She loves to copy whatever I'm doing, so if I'm doing chores, I'll give her a safe alternative so she can "help" (example: give her a Swiffer when I'm cleaning the floors). She also loves to open and empty drawers so I'll keep one drawer in the kitchen stocked with safe stuff for her to play with. I rotate it out every so often so she has something new to explore. Kinda like her own version of sensory boxes :)

We also color, although now that we have hardwood, I think I'm gonna get her a kiddie sized table to color on so she doesn't accidentally get crayon on the floors. She just stopped trying to eat the crayons a couple wks ago (she's now 1.5 years).

@Mrs. Pen: LO would do that with the ipad. But i would power it off, and feign confusion as to why i couldn't turn it on. I would press buttons look at the ipad all puzzled, and shrug my shoulders, "sorry, i don't know what happened." :P Maybe unplug the tv and go, "Sorry C, don't know what happened!" hahahaa

At 14 months we like to colour with crayons (kind of), read books, wander outside, do some chores. Right now we are foing through a phase where nothing is fun and all we want to do is whine. Ugh!

LO is 16 months old and we watch a show every day- usually Sesame Street. We also dance to music, go play outside in the kiddie pool, throw rocks, look at flowers, talk about nature, mimic animal sounds, walk around, etc. We play with the Tupperware drawer in the kitchen, play with toys, read lots of books, fold (for her, it's "fold" haha) laundry, and try to take a trip outside the house most days: play dates, the park, the store, special ice cream dates, visit grandparents, etc.

@Freckles: I wish we had somewhere else to move the TV. He begs for it because he sees it all day every day. But in a 900 sq ft apt that is one main room (kitchen/LR/DR all in one) it's pretty impossible. And I don't want it in our bedroom.

@locavore_mama: We tried introducing J to legos and he didn't quite get it. He thought he could stack them like blocks haha. He was pretty frustrated. I'm sure if we tried to play with them daily he'd catch on faster. We don't have any though.

@locavore_mama: They are a Staples product. Can't seem to find a link though! They're great because if she starts drawing somewhere other than paper, i just retract the crayons back! They look like this: http://www.staples.com.au/art-craft-educational/drawing-instruments/crayon-chalk-pastels/micador-twistaz-colourfun-retractable-crayons-pack-of-12

@locavore_mama: We use mega bloks too!

- draw with crayons (i bought the retractable kind protected in a plastic case)
- go to the playground
- take out all the sofa/chair cushions and she'll walk around/play on the furniture
- read
- if i'm cooking, i'll give her a bowl filled with some water and she'll whisk it. I can't give her beans/rice for fear she'll eat it (because she definitely will)

We recently brought the tv down to the basement, which has been great!! Out of sight, out of mind. :)

@mrsjazz: how do you let her play with beans? Do you keep a Tupperware of beans just for her to play with?
they're old enough for megabloks??

LO who is almost 16 months loves playing in the Tupperware drawer or any cabinet for that matter. She loves music so her piano, and a empty metal popcorn container as her drum, we like having fake picnics, shape sorter, singing, her teepee, playing with doggie, running circles around the kitchen with her walkers. I tried crayons the other day and yup right in her mouth. Gonna wait a while more for that one! We also go outside twice a day and she likes me to push her around in her wagon, if it's warm enough I set up her water table and baby pool, she loves riding her coupe, pushing her lawn mower, getting up and down the patio furniture. We go for a walk with the doggie or up the park. And reading, flashcards.

Of course this is all between toddler tantrum meltdowns. ;)

That's a kind of tough age. They're sort of independent/verbal, but not quite! I did some play dough then, just to plant the idea, and got a lot of mileage out of inflated balloons (bat them around), craft pompoms (mostly spilled on my floor, but also sorted by size/color), corks in a bowl of water (hand him a small sieve/slatted spoon), and BALLS (any shape--rolled, tossed, and thrown). Careful with the latter. My now-3yo has excellent aim! ;)

We do lots of outings - playground, library, pool, friends houses, bicycle rides, sometimes the store, local gardens, woods

About going to the store, I let LO wander, it takes longer but ah well. Sometimes I direct her to what I need, other times she pushes the cart or she has a baby stroller she can push. There's def been some times where she needed correction or there's almost been a disaster (she took an egg out of a carton at the grocery store and tried to break it on the frying pan display next to the eggs - I was too focused on what type of cheese I should get - luckily she didn't break the egg).

At home - gardening - lots of outside time, chores, music, toys, she loves bubbles right now, and coloring with crayons, chalk, etc.

@artbee: J hates shopping now. He whines and fits the whole time because he wants to get down and into everything! So we're pretty limited to going places that he can explore without my interference.

@T.H.O.U.: he loves laundry - he helps but the wet clothes in the dryer! But we only do laundry 1x a week because we have to pay for it.

And he loves playing with the dogs.

J is nearly 18 months old, and since I work part time, I am still home with him several days a week. Since his attention span is pretty short it's hard finding enough things to keep him occupied during the day. He's addicted to TV (meaning he asks for it ALL.THE.TIME) and we don't even let him watch it every day - it's one of the causes of his daily meltdowns, when we say no!

Here is what we do::
- dance parties to music
- he loves stacking blocks
- create "obstacle courses" in the living room with couch cushions and boxes
- blowing bubbles
- coloring
- reading books
- pushing him on his trike down the hallway

What do you do with your toddler to fill the day?
