Thanks guys! I hadn’t considered martial arts because it seems so calm haha but sounds like it’s worked for your kids and I’m sure he’d love to try it! He loved gymnastics but the gyms near us don’t have classes for boys over 5 which is super annoying!

my son is the same way. After covid, I want(ed) to enroll him in gymnastics, I think he would love it. I might consider martial arts but I don't know if that would make him hit his sister less or more....

As for now, he jumps on our master bed every day. We have a headboard that he jumps off of and he does flying kicks, somersaults, etc. We pile up pillows on the bed and he jumps into that. Pillow fights, etc.

Google "heavy work" activities.

@HappyBaker: my son is the same way. He started jiu jitsu at 5.5 and it’s been a game changer for us (although of course shut down right now). He goes twice a week and not only is it great for the physical aspect, but it’s been huge for controlling his body, listening & following instructions, self-control, etc. We’ve been really pleasantly surprised.

We enrolled DD (5.5) in martial arts. It was a recommendation from her pediatrician based on constant need for physical activity. On the surface it doesn’t seem like it would replace rough housing but it is about the discipline and control of your body. She only went to one class before everything shut down but we have been finding Facebook lives and videos on YouTube for her to do at home. She loves it and I think it has been really helpful for her.

Has he tried any sort of martial art? I know that isn’t as physical as wrestling but it might harness that energy into something a little more controlled while learning body awareness.

I was going to suggest wrestling and in our area they def have it for kindergarten and up. What about gymnastics? The bouncing and jumping and going into the foam pit might hit some of those same needs

@Chuckles: That's a great idea! I hadn't even considered it since he doesn't know how to skate, but that would tire him out so much and that seems to be what he thrives on! Thanks!

It can be kind of expensive, but how about hockey? It's a good group game with lots of skills to learn, but it's also very physical.

My 5.5 year old's favorite thing in the world is to roughhouse and wrestle with us. It's almost like an innate need for pressure / deep physical contact, that sounds weird but hopefully you know what I mean ha. He isn't into sports at all, though obviously hasn't tried them all yet - but any other suggestions for organized activities for a kid like this? We'd love for him to have one thing he does outside the house (once COVID is not a concern of course) as his older sister has tons of activities and he really wants to do something but doesn't know what IT is.
DS says he really wants to learn to wrestle for real (not WWE, like actual wrestling) but I can't find any groups around here for elementary aged kids.

If you had a kid who loved / needed to roughhouse all the time, what activities did they enjoy?
