My friends daughter is almost 3 and still puts everything in her mouth. We just realized there was a pattern to it. She puts more in her mouth when she has an ear infection. We noticed when she had tubes in, she stopped putting as much in and one fell out and she has an infection again and again is putting a bunch in her mouth.

My son has never had an affinity for putting stuff into his mouth so we have never worried.

@Springtime: oooh the dog food - yes, that's another thing. I'm not *as* worried about that because the dogs are on a super organic, limited ingredient food (if you look at the ingredients, it looks like they eat better than we do!). She knows to spit that out, but it doesn't stop her from putting it in her mouth and running around until we can grab her and tell her to spit it out.

@Crumbs: That's what I'm afraid of! I got her some sidewalk chalk over the weekend so she can start doodling, and all she did was eat big chunks of it. I feel like I'm always saying "no, spit that out" lol

My DS is the same way! He wants to eat everything, doesn't care how gross it is! He loves dog food and rocks! I'm ready for this phase to be over!

At least she spits it out. DD will swallow anything if I try to take it from her, even soap! Eww! But if I try to offer something else, she opens her mouth enough for me to fish it out. I can not wait until this phase passes. But from what I've been reading, it's gonna be a looooong while.

DD is 27mo and she will still occasionally put things in her mouth. Nothing to worry about, though it is a pain!

I found that the more I reacted, the more it seemed my son shoved stuff in his mouth. I just let him take the lead (within reason) and at around 18 months he stopped. He barely puts stuff in his mouth now, but it's totally normal, it's how they explore.

it is different for every kid. charlie got better about it at 18 months which is when we started arts and crafts. he is 3 1/2 and still occasionally puts things in his mouth even though he knows he's not supposed to.

olive on the other hand has been very good about not putting things in her mouth so i never worried too much about her choking on things. she also started arts and crafts earlier

there's a reason that most choking hazards say not for kids 3 and younger because they love putting things in their mouths!

I'm starting to get concerned. She's 16 months, but she puts everything in her mouth. And she's not just tasting it, buy eating it! Rocks, crayons, chalk, lotion (ewww!), sunscreen, bubbles.... I mean, she's obsessssssed with it. I have tried distracting, redirecting, telling her no in every way I can... but she still eats it. Even when it tastes nasty and she spits it out, she will still go in for another bite.

Is this normal toddler behavior or does my girl just have a strange pallet? What age does it stop?
