@Cherrybee: Yeah, I just try and move on too. So hard though. Lately she is worse with me...no throwing but literally refusing to touch food. But only for me...DH is fine! Grr!

My LO is also 13.5 months and can eat with a spoon as long as the food will stick to it (yogurt, mashed potatoes, thick pureed soups). It's super messy so I don't let him do it too often, but sometimes he insists. He likes to eat off loaded forks but he can't spear or scoop food with them.

@illumina: I'm pretty chill about it these days - I serve up the food and if it gets thrown all over the floor I let the dogs in to eat it and move on! It's a bit easier for me to cope with though because she is at Nanny & Grandad's house for all her meals Mon-Weds (she eats a fair bit there) and at nursery Thurs/Fri, where she eats like a horse. So what if she eats only quavers for two days a week - she's not going to get scurvy. *shrug*

Hmm, 15 months here and she *can* eat off a pre-loaded fork/spoon but struggles to get the food onto the utensil. I say *can* because she is a little monster at the dinner table and prefers to throw her cutlery/food/plate/drink rather than consume anything....!!

LO is 12 months and using a spoon...good enough to get some food but not super efficiently. She can manage to hold the correct end and put the right end in her mouth, and get a few scoops of food like hummus or yogurt but not pieces of fruit or similar foods. She often gives up the spoon after a few scoops and opts to use her hands instead. :silly:

ETA: I feed her from my fork if she wants a bite of what I'm eating but I don't think she's ready to wield a fork on her own yet. I keep letting her eat off mine so she gets used to it though.

Eek. I barely let him do it by himself at 21 months. He's fine with a loaded spoon or a little guiding and is good with a fork.

He wasn't really able to do it well until about 17/18 months. He was using a fork at 12 or 13 months but he always tipped the spoon upside down.

In my experience, the more you let them practice the quicker they learn. It also depends on their fine motor skills of course. With LO1 I had a lot of time and patience for meals, so he could do it around his first birthday. With my second we practiced way less cuz I was busy with two of them at meal times so I think it was closer to 15 months? Anyway, I wouldn't worry about it. :)

Probably around 18-19 months we started working on a spoon with liquids (couldn't deal with the mess potential before then!) and around 22-23 months he was quite good at it, to the point where I could give him a bowl of something and not hover.

ETA - we did forks well before, I think poking things was easier than scooping.

He is almost 17 months, and has been self feeding for a few months now, but only became successful with a spoon and fork in the last month. He doesn't really get the "scooping" technique with his spoon. He touches his spoon to the food, and licks it off the bottom :silly:

She can do pre-loaded spoons and forks now and has been able to do it for a while, but she can't do the scooping part herself. She's 15 months. At her daycare, they don't even really LET them self-feed until 18 months, when they move to the toddler room. And even then, it's mostly finger foods instead of stuff you'd use for a spoon.

@illumina: I don't even think I tried giving Xander a spoon that early! I might not have even given him a spoon until 15 months, so maybe it was a few more months before he mastered it. I can't remember. He's a pro now at 20 months though and hit-or-miss with a fork (which I started giving him at 18 months).

My LO did the same thing at 13 months, it takes a lot of coordination to self feed! She's still shaky and makes a huge mess at 16 months but is more successful now (starting about 15 months she could do it successfully)

LO is 13.5 months and cannot quite figure out how to use a spoon yet. Should she be able to by this point? She can scoop the food up from the bowl, but then drops the spoon...or if we give her a loaded spoon she puts it in her mouth, takes the food off but then puts the wrong end of the spoon back into the bowl!
