Can I threadjack a little and ask which stories your LOs like? I remember loving the AG series when I was a kid (Samantha, Molly, Felicity...), I know there a ton more now compared to then. My DD doesn’t know any of them yet.

I'd wait til she asks and can anticipate it! If you want to introduce her to the idea of the dolls, I'd start her with a Target doll and see if she even likes them. My girls (4 and 6) do love them, and we'll move onto American Girls when the 4 year old is old enough to treat the dolls a little better. They still don't know the difference between the brands at this point.

Gave my daughter her first 2 for her 6th bday. She loved them and understood that she must take good care of them because they were expensive dolls. I would wait until the child is responsible enough to understand how to take care of them.

She plays with them pretty regularly and I’m getting her a third one for Xmas this year.

My daughter was 4 when she got hers. It hass never been an absolute favorite toy, but it has been solid. My Mom makes dresses for my daughter and always makes a matching one for the doll.

My daughter had been getting the catalog since she was a baby and loves to go poke around the store. When she's a little older (she's 5 now) I want to do tea parties with friends and their dolls. I remember doing this as a kid with little tiny tea sandwiches and cakes and it was so much fun. The AG store near us doesn't have a cafe you can just go to, it's only available for birthday parties.

My 6 year old (7 in Jan) is getting one from Santa this year. She has seen the catalogs for a while and has been wanting one. I wanted to wait until she was able to start reading the books somewhat independently just because I thought it would make her more invested (since they are expensive!). Like others, I’m doing the real doll but accessories from Target.

I gave my 6 or 7 year old God-daughter one. It was her second. She immediately stripped her and changed her clothes. So in that case it was a good gift. I recall fondly my first one at 7. The catalogs had been coming to my house for at least half a year and I wanted one so badly. I still get the catalogs, but there’s just too much darn stuff in it like the old Toys R Us flyers.

If your girl isn’t into them just yet I would take @JennyPenny: approach and start with the books.

I don't have girls, but am a huge American Girl fan. If it were me and my daughter didn't know about AG yet, I wouldn't do the store. I'd save that for there being a *love* to make the most of it. For now, I'd start by getting some of the stories for the historical dolls and see if she likes them and starts to get into it.

Grandma got her an AG doll the Christmas before age 6. She loved her, then ignored her and now loves her again. Now she has 2 because I got one super cheap. I really think AG girls are worth the money. Their quality vs their Target/Walmart counterparts is so much better!

At what age did you get your LO an American Girl doll and is it worth the $$$? DD is turning 6 this year and doesn't really know what an American Girl doll is. She got gifted one of the American Girl baby dolls when she was little but she rarely played with it. Right now she is obsessed with Barbies and girl superheroes. For her 6th birthday I was thinking of taking her to the American Girl store for the first time and have her pick out a doll and have brunch or afternoon tea at the cafe. DH is against it because he thinks the dolls are creepy which I don't disagree with but hey, we have two girls so I told him to suck it up, they will wanna have dolls! :silly: My question is do I expose her to AG now or wait until she actually asks for it. I think she will enjoy the whole store and cafe experience, but not sure if it's better to hold off for as long as I can. Haha.
