About 14 months. It was torture for two nights and then it was all good. So glad we did it then instead of waiting because the addiction was serious and battling with her now (2.5) would be so much harder.

At 31 months. Totally by accident because I broke his very last pacifier while washing it. That first night, he did not sleep a single minute. And his naps have gone from 3-3.5 hours each day, to maybe an hour or so once or twice a week. He does sleep a solid 12 hours at night, but the napless days are soooo long.

We took ours on vacation last month with E. On the way back, I gave it to her on the plane and she kept finding it during the day while we were there (previously only used it in bed for naps or bedtime). Once we got back, she kept seeing it in her crib when I was changing her diaper and pointing to it. So I decided to just wean her from it because I didn't want to deal with it when she could understand more and miss it and ask for it. We just went cold turkey and she has been fine! I give her a tiny blanket and a lovey and a small stuffed animal if she wants it instead now.

@MamaG: we have a trip at 16 months and I think we will deal with it after that! I know many use it til 3 but I hate the idea of having to wean something hanging over my head, if that makes sense.

18 ish months. I was worried about it because he loved it, but I also knew he'd gone to sleep just fine for other people without it! It turned out to not really be an issue! Now he can sleep without any sleep crutches if we need him to (although quiet and away from people is still a must.)

@winniebee: We took it from C at 17 months (had already limited her to sleep only). It was way easier than I anticipated. We did it a Friday night at bedtime. She fussed a bit that night and the next nap but that was all, never looked back.

For K, she's already weaned at daycare, so in theory I should stop for naps at home too. But she's so easy when in her crib with a pacifier that I'm not ready to mess with it. We have vacation (flying/condo/beach) at 18 months and if she's not weaned before then, I will do it after vacation.

@Mrs D: This is me exactly. Kid is just past 2.5 and only uses it at night. It seems to help her settle down, otherwise she just will not stop talking. She usually loses it at night and is fine without it 99% of the time. Hoping by 3, but definitely not excited about it. We're about to launch into a big girl bed transition and hopefully after that stabilizes, we can kick the paci too.

@hilsy85: He said it was probably "calcification", but that we needed to come back again in a few months to check again. He didn't say it was from pacifier use, but I think that's because I was still nursing and he thought it was from that. We've weaned but the spots are bigger. I'm just hypothesizing but the paci seems like the next logical thing.

@catlady: hm did the dentist say the paci could be causing them? and that it's decay? in that case that would prob sway me to wean sooner rather than later :(

@hilsy85: She is 28 months. I was hoping to do it before age 2.5 years. Like you, the teeth is really what is freaking me out. She also has little brown spots behind her lower front teeth and I am wondering if the paci is causing it, since we do brush her teeth and I always make sure to get back there. Last time we had them checked, they weren't cavities yet but they have grown bigger in the last few months and worry me. Ugh sleep vs. teeth.

@catlady: how old is your LO? Honestly, I really wish I had waited til 3 or after--seeing how aware he is now, I think we could have tried the paci fairy or trading it in for a big toy or something. And I could have gotten a few more months of good sleep before the baby came!

@hilsy85: Oh no! This is what we are scared of, too. My LO's teeth have actually started growing inward (I think because she just sucks so hard). But she sleeps so well with the pacifier. It is such a hard call for me.

We are fast approaching the 3 year mark and my little man is obsessed (he only has it for sleep). We have started talking to him how at his third birthday the pacifier has to go. He brings it up occasionally so I know he's processing it. We'll see how it goes.

@JoJoGirl: Prior to weaning, he had been sleeping like a CHAMP. I plopped him in his crib for nap, he would sleep around 2 hours, and bedtime was similarly easy--slept from like 730-630. Post paci weaning, naps became a HUGE battle. Eventually, I had to just stay in the room with him until he fell asleep, but that stopped working all the time, and he was always SUPER cranky when he woke up. Bed time became a shit show, where he would be in bed at 7:30 or 8 but not fall asleep til 9 or 9:30. He also woke up earlier. and in general just became clingier around bedtime--wanting someone to sit with him and hold his hand at the beginning of teh night and th emiddle of the night. It only really got better after like 3-4 months, and then he started to drop his nap--which improved his night time sleep. And then baby #2 came and it all went to crap again :(

Just around her 2nd birthday, we started talking to her about being a big girl, and offering little massages before nap and bedtime to distract her from the usual comfort. Her pacifier was gone a week later, and it was pretty much a voluntary surrender. Really shocked me, since she was obsessed.

We've been going to the dentist a lot since LO fell and hit her front tooth, so the dentist backed us up on that and gave LO a special present after she went one week without it.

15 months for my first. We just took it cold turkey (she only used it for sleep), and the first few nights stunk and then it was fine. Her dentist wanted it gone by 18 months, so I figured we'd start then to give us some time to adjust if it took a while. DD2 is 15 months this weekend and still has hers. We just started taking about it, but I hate to rock the sleeping boat.
