@zippylef: Every baby is different. Mine doesnt sleep in the stroller and doesn't sleep in car rides, so I don't think motion is his way of falling asleep. Yours likes it. :)

@zippylef: have you tried swaddling? I find if I swaddle him in a nice warm swaddle blanket it's almost the same as me holding him. I've been putting him down drowsy since almost day 1. (Not 100 percent of the time, but often enough to say I do it successfully). Swaddled is the only way he'll sleep.

My lo is the same way, He still needs help going to sleep and he is 12 weeks. He is still swaddled, but I'm thinking of unswaddling him and seeing how he does since he is always trying to break free. Lately he's been finding his fingers to suck on, so maybe that would help. He is dependent on a pacifier for falling asleep right now, which has made it impossible for him to self-soothe, because he can't pick it up and put it back in his mouth.

I'm interested to hear more about what others say.

With our older daughter, I swear she was about 6 months old before we could put her down awake. And even then it was a solid 20 minutes of crying...but if we tried to rock her to sleep, she would cry for about 40 minutes! So we went with the better of two evils.
Now, with our younger daughter, it is about 50/50 awake/asleep. And you never know which one will work...she is 9 weeks old :)

Okay, glad to hear that she's just too young still. I was hoping that was the case. I keep reading that when you rock to sleep the kids becomes dependent on it, etc. I didn't really think I needed to worry about that with a 6 week old, but I wanted to make sure.

She is a good sleeper once she gets there and she usually goes back to sleep after night feedings really easy but it's getting her down the first time that's a challenge. I normally have to pick her back up at least once to re-comfort her so she will sleep.

We waited a long time to do that with LO. She would always fall asleep eating and we didn't want to mess with it if she was already asleep, so we just put her down. Luckily we never had any issues later on though, she loves going to bed.

We started around 4 weeks old and it seems like she actually prefers to be put in her crib drowsy/awake, rather than dead asleep.

When LO was about 2 months old, she started breaking out of her swaddle because she wanted to put her fingers/thumb in her mouth. When we eventually sleep-trained at 3.5 months, she used thumb-sucking to self-soothe so since then she's been put in her crib drowsy.

At about 6-7 weeks I tried and it worked. It's sporadic though. She mostly naps in her swing or when we're out in her carseat, but at night I can put her down if shes calm and she'll fall asleep

LO is 6 weeks old and we have to put her into a deep sleep before she will let us put her down in her crib. If she's not dead to the world, those little eyes pop right back open and we're back at square one. I've tried comforting her to sleep without picking her back up and I think it's worked all of one time. We had a rough night last night when she decided that 3 am was the best time to be awake. I finally just laid her down drowsy to see if she would fall asleep (we use a white noise machine) and it started a screaming fit. I figure she might still be too little for it.

How old was your LO when they started soothing themselves to sleep?
