We went places after a few weeks but it was very limited and in a car seat. We didn't really go out a lot until the two month shots and then I felt safe taking her out more.

I had my son at Target when he was 4 days old, I needed some stuff, he needed some stuff, I needed to walk some after my c-section, I didn't trust my husband to know what some of the things on my list was... Sooooo we all went to Target, but he was in his infant seat, in the cart, with a muslin swaddle over it when he was asleep, which was most of the time we were there.

DD was born end of June on a Thursday. We left hospital on Saturday and took her (and me) to CVS for RXs. I know we were out Tuesday too - at a local BFing group and then a beer/tap room near us.

#1 she was past two months when we were finally able to go out, closer to four before regularly going out and about.. because she was so so fussy, cried all day long.

#2 immediately went out. Got sick in the first month and had the whole sepsis work up in his second month. No fun but he was fine. He didn't get sick from going out, he got sick from lo1 being in preschool!

#3 we were super paranoid about until she just recently made 2 months. Didn't want to do the hospital stay (our dr says they don't worry about the serious stuff as much after the 2 month visit and shots) but moreover it has been the worst cold and flu season and my elementary school kiddo already brought home a lot without us leaving the house. The 2 month appt was such a relief!!!

@LAZB: not that I think it means they won’t get sick, but I’m not as worried about germs from strangers at that aspect. Where as my toddler is in preschool and people bring their kid in that’s been throwing up, which for me, means, my kid is absolutely going to be throwing up soon too. But I do understand that my toddler will handle that illness better than a newborn so that’s why I was asking about that marker. Makes more sense that it’s more about timeframe/age than the actual vaccines they receive at that appt. I’ve also never had a ped recommend that so I was curious!

@LBee: yes, I’ve definitely been more concerned about my older one getting my younger one sick so I’m glad this third babe still is cooking for 2 more months to hopefully get past this sick season. 😔

I guess the other thing for me is that once you have more than 1, I see no way to not do life with all the kids present. Like I still have to bring my other two to school once the third comes, ya know? And that requires going into the school two times a day. And groceries, etc etc. Not that I’d put my newborn in a risky situation just to “get out” but that I get a few days in the hospital and then life moves forward with the day to day so there’s no real way around it.

@birdofafeather: @LAZB: We were told that the 8 week rule is because the bulk of fevers are either (a) meningitis or (b) birth contracted illnesses (predominately herpes). Since illnesses can go awry so quickly with babies and it's difficult to make a physical assessment of a baby accurately, any fever under 8 weeks is considered automatic sepsis work-up. This includes a spinal tap among a lot of other things you don't want to see your < 8 week old go through if you don't have to.

@birdofafeather: babies are bigger and stronger by 2 months, and even though they aren’t protected for cold or flu, they are somewhat protected by other things.

It surprises me that people think that baby wearing keeps babies from getting sick. Even though it’s a good start, many viruses are airborne, so going out is still risky when they are tiny.

Real question: why waiting until the 2 month vaccines? Cold and flu aren’t covered by those or is that just a point where you felt like baby was bigger and could handle more? I just ask because so many people mentioned it. My newborns though were always wrapped up and not passed around. I worried more about my toddlers putting disgusting things in their mouth with public germs than my newborns so I guess I am confused on the logic.

@LAZB: I'm so sorry :heart:

With DS1, I was obviously a first time mom. I wouldn't take him out until after his 2 month shots. Even then, I was super protective of who held him.

With DS2, we took full advantage of the sleepy newborn stage and took him out much earlier.

Both were born in September, so we took them around the neighborhood early to get fresh air. They both always sleep better with some fresh air.

She was like a week old when I went to someone's house. It was a babywearing meet up and I really needed help wrapping her. I was comfortable going since only 1 other person held her, otherwise she was wrapped up on me the whole time.

Also, this was LO2 haha. I don't think I went anywhere with LO1 the first 2 months!

With LO1 we were grocery shopping at 5 days old because I was going stir crazy.

With LO2 we were out about the same but really out every day once she was 2 weeks old because I was home alone for large portions of the week and we had to get LO1 to and from daycare.

With LO3 & LO4 it was a while until we really took them out but they were just so small and skinny and near term preemies so we were a little more careful (and they were born in January). So I think we went for a walk with them when they were 4 weeks old but they weren't even home until they were 2 weeks old.

DS1 - born in sept so weather was still pretty nice. We took walks outdoors and sparingly to places like the drug store where he stayed in stroller (covered) or carrier. I definitely waited till after shots to really let him mingle with the general public. I’m in a major city though so it was easy to avoid taking him out.

DS2 is 2 weeks old now and I’m hesitant to take him anywhere besides necessary well visits (we take a taxi for that and I keep him in the car seat turned away from everyone or we walk him around outside until they call us in). Just because of this flu season. I’m so ready for nice weather though and to take him on walks. I feel bad that he’s stuck inside so much! Though I know he doesn’t have a clue :silly: he still just sleeps all day.

@CatchAFallingStar: This is super relevant to me right now too with LO at 3 weeks! I think you'll get a variety of answers and I think they may also depend on whether it's the first child or second.

Our pediatrician recommended waiting till the 2 month shots. The hospital strongly recommended against exposing her to crowds, especially children, because RSV and the flu are so prevalent right now in MA. We've taken her outside on walks most days, and people have come to the house 1 or 2 at a time. I did pop into a bakery last week because my bladder was going to explode and I had her with me - put the cover on her carrier and hoped for the best. I think I would consider doing similar at other places that were mostly populated by adults and not too crowded, but I am very anxious about her getting sick because if she gets a fever before 6 weeks it apparently entails a full workup including blood and spinal fluid and I don't want to do that to her. It's a little disappointing - I had every intention of doing dinners out with DH while she was tiny and sleepy - but I've accepted that's a side effect of having a winter baby during flu season.

My first was an April baby and we were out for walks the first week. Close contact with others, confined spaces probably 4-6 weeks
My second was an end of year baby. It has been tough because it’s my second, my husband is never home and we have to leave the house often bc of my first. So I just sorta started taking him out immediately. Like 4 days old. Of course no close contact but we were on the subway at 10 days old. Just what it was. I’ve been paranoid bc of the flu, but really moreso what my older one is bringing home from pre k. It has been challenging. But no matter the time of year or what number kid, I get out of the house pretty early compared to others.

I haven't been anywhere yet with my almost 6 week old besides tons of walks around the neighborhood and the ped's office. But I'm sure the ped's office is the worst place I could possibly bring him. I use hand sanitizer a zillion times, don't touch the chairs in the waiting room, etc. If I had older kids I'd be much more concerned about the germs they bring home than him catching something airborne while being worn at starbucks or target, etc.

I have just had this debate with my MIL. My view is by 3 or 4 days old they'll be in a wrap on walks outside. No human contact. I'll run to the grocery store if needed or to DS's school (again, baby on me) . By 3-4 weeks we will go out to eat (outside seating only). No family get togethers until 6-8 weeks.

We welcome healthy visitors and I breastfeed, so I'm not super worried. But I'm also not bringing a week old baby to church or a large family get together where people expect to hold him

Both of mine were flu season babes. I waited eight weeks (shots) with my first. With my second, I did go out shopping some but only during quiet times. I would either use a car seat cover or wrap her closely and literally hold the wrap over her face (obviously with room to breathe) if we got too close to another person. She did get sick (probably from DD1 despite my caution), but fortunately was okay. Any illness in a newborn is so scary and it is not worth the risk to me. If I needed to get out of the house I would mostly take a long walk with the baby.

LO1 was born in July, and we were out and about the first week. LO2 was born in February, and I think we went out after about 2 weeks-ish - but kept him in the car seat with a light blanket over it.

My first was a July baby, so I brought her places that were outside for the most part- like sitting at a restaurant outside- within a couple weeks.

My second was a December baby. It took longer to bring her to something like a restaurant but I did bring her to my older daughters classes. She would be in a carrier or car seat, and while there were other kids around, there were also other moms who were aware and helped keep germs from her.
