I still have my Barbie Dream House, with all the original furniture and I remember having it set up in my room until I was at least in 6th grade. It's not that I played with it, more that I enjoyed setting it up and decorating it.

Came back to share my favorite Barbie residence: was a converted bookcase. Each shelf had two rooms, but I don’t 100% remember how. It may have been one of those ‘70’s bookcases where a divider was off centered every other shelf or I could have put up thick cardboard. I totally remember how I made pillows for all the beds- pressed apart cotton balls with fabric wrapped around and stapled to seal it tight. Scrap paper adorned the back of the shelves to give it even more personality. If I needed more space I just set up the kitchen and living room (I had two sets) in front of the book case.

I did not like my actual Barbie dream house with the elevator. Something about the painted on murals looked really fake too me.

I think a lot of girls play with Barbies until 8-10, easily, even 11 or 12. I think that as they get older, they might not really share it with their friends, and they play in a different way than when they were older, but many still enjoy Barbies. I remember having a Dreamhouse in my bedroom easily until I was 8 or 9. And while she doesn't actively play with them anymore, my 15 year old niece has only recently started being willing to part with some of her favorite Barbie/American Girl doll stuff.

Still, if you're worried about her interest fading, I'd suggest checking your local mom swap sites, thrift stores, or garage sales. You can easily pick one up in good condition for $10-$20, and it's plastic so easy to wipe down (no ick factor like with stuffed toys).

I was probably 10 when I stopped but my niece (who is 14) will sometimes still play with DD because she likes seeing all the new clothes and accessories Barbie has now! :)

@HappyBaker: No kids, but my sister I played with Barbies together when we were kids a ton. I know we played together until I was 9 or 10 and she was 12ish- which was probably late, but we were really into it and it was the one thing we ever played together.

DD is turning 6 this Fall and right now she is obsessed with Barbies. She could easily give away all her other toys as long as she had her Barbies. For her birthday / Christmas the past year she has talked non stop about the Barbie Dreamhouse. I’m considering either making her a DIY version (or doing it together) or just buying her one, but I’m worried she’ll grow out of it super fast. Case in point I slaved over a super cute regular size dollhouse a few years ago and she is totally over it because it only fits Calici Critter size animals and people.

If you had a Barbie obsessed kid did it last a few years? Or is this another super quick fad we’ll fade out of?
