DS went down his first slide a few weeks ago, around 11 months. Grandma was at the top while I was at the bottom, and DS seemed somewhat indifferent to the experience. He's not walking yet, so he's not going down anything independently.

LO's never gone down a slide before! Going to take her to the park this week though, so she'll be a few days shy of 1.

@808love: my LO is more of a playground daredevil than an animal lover so far! you really gotta watch them closely on the playground so it is tiring as you mentioned!

@Andrea: I felt that way when my toddler greeted a friend's parrot and a 4 yr old shied away. I want my dearie to be brave but not get in over her head! That's pretty awesome she can learn how to go down a slide very soon!! Fun, fun!
Thanks for the specifics, Mamabees!

I agree with @Red. It depends on what they have been exposed to. My LO started going down small slides before 1 year because that is what they have at daycare. So by 14 months she was fine to go down big slides at playgrounds. In contrast, I know older kids who don't go down big slides because their parents haven't tried it out with them. Kids are brave but I think the parents need to be brave, too, to let their kids do these things!

I have this hilarious video of my 22 month old going down a slide last weekend that a 4 year old wouldn't go down. You could hear my friend yelling at his daughter "Come on, come down! A little baby just did it!" LOL

I think it really depends how often they get to practice. My LO started going down the smallest slides on her own at about 15 months but she doesn't get to practice a lot. However, my friend's LO goes down intermediate slides (5 ft tall) with no issues at 14 months since there's a slide at her daycare that she plays with every day.

Yes, playgrounds are tiring, especially when your toddler isn't quite sure-footed yet. :)

We went to a playground today with my newly 14 month old. She scrambled up the slide like no tomorrow. We spotted her coming down and she's nowhere near going independently. But she's so brave and this seems like it's one of those things where I'm totally freaked out about it one minute and then a few days (weeks) later, she can do it fine. Anyway, I still think this is a little young but she had so much fun.
BTW, the playground is very tiring for parents, no? She is sleeping like a baby tonight though!!
