@SSLM: I don't think it's naive at all - my 25 month old loves the stroller and being carried; she'll happily ride at 3 and maybe even 4. it's my own wishful thinking that perhaps soon she'll decide she'd rather walk :)

Once you add a dog into the equation you might not have enough hands for some of the scenarios I suggested and a double sounds more necessary. If you have a garage/storage space for the double, go for it!!! I live in an apartment in a big city, so my strollers end up in the entrance like big awkward umbrella stands - literally, the other day our cleaner hung an umbrella off of the bugaboo, EEEk!

@PinkElephant: my biggest concern is we love to do long walks around our neighbourhood, and also go to the dog park and walk on trails, for exercise. Maybe I'm naive thinking we'll be able to continue doing this once M is older? It's very possible she'll refuse the stroller as she's pretty independent and strong willed!

Thanks everyone for weighing in. I had assumed we would need a double for sure but now I'm thinking maybe not!

We have a double, a baby jogger city select, and a 22 mo age gap. We used the single seat with one but shortly before DS2 was born DS1 was not very enthusiastic about riding in the stroller. We haven't used the double seats that much - DS2 is 8 mos and still pretty tiny so I wear him a lot for walks, DS1 likes to ride on his "trailer", a Joovy bumprider roller board. We also have a double bike trailer that is also a running stroller and we use that one more often. We are a 4 stroller household :silly:

Totally depends on your lifestyle. I live in a city and walk to work, so I will need a stroller until the commute changes.

I think it depends on your lifestyle. We live in a city with no car and I use the stroller all the time to go everywhere and I use it on public transit. My LOs are almost exactly 3 years apart, and I definitely don't need a double. I think if they had been 2.5 years or less apart, I would have gone for the double. Instead, we have a roller board that attaches to the stroller.

If I lived in the suburbs and didn't need a stroller very often, I would definitely not get a double.

We will have a 3 year gap and did the B-Ready with a lower seat. That way we aren't locked into a double and when they are more like ages 4 and 1, we can just use it as a single stroller.

We're going for the same age gap and will likely have one dbl stroller at some point. Most likely a dbl umbrella. We are in the burbs and need it for special outings/mall.

My kids are 2.5 yrs apart

It depends on how often you go out and about.

I work FT out of the house so its only the weekends that we would use it.

When DD was little I wore her in the Beco and put DS in the stroller

Once DS hit 3 he didn't want to use the stroller anymore so he would walk and DD would go in the stroller. We didn't do any long day outings like the zoo but while on vacation if he got tired DH just put him on his shoulders.

We did buy a double but I sold it when #2 was about 6 months because we just never used it

I think if I was a SAHM and was out and about it would have been used a lot more!!

Mine are 22 months apart and I am trying to hold off on a double stroller. We live in a big city and id love a double for walking-only excursions, but think I'd struggle to use it in taxis and on public transport. If I want to get both kids out and say, into a taxi, I have to put on the baby, hold toddler's hand and get her into her harness for the taxi, then fold and stow the stroller, all fast enough to not tick off the driver and without knocking the baby's head on stroller parts or failing to wrangle my toddler and having her do a runner on me! Just the thought of that maneuver makes me sweat! :)

I was just given a babyzen Yoyo (the airplane carry-on compliant stroller) so I plan to primarily wear the baby and push my toddler in that. If she wants to walk, it's easy enough to carry over my shoulder. My other option will be Bugaboo w/buggy board and an emergency carrier in case LO#1 refuses to walk and/or needs to be corralled, I can scoop up #2 and pop #1 in. This won't work til they can use the same stroller seat (when the baby is around 6 months old) though.

My kids are small so I hope that by the time DD#2 is too big to carry, DD#1 will be more reliable as a walker or buggy board rider. I think the extra half year in your case means you might be able to get by without the double in many circumstances, since your older one will probably be pretty into being the "big kid" by the time the little one is at an age where s/he really needs to be in a stroller., and might be willing to walk or ride a wheeled board because "strollers are for babies".

Though I'm reading back through this and it sounds like most of the city dwellers say they DO need the double.....we may be doomed to become a four stroller household!

@sslm: I'd love to know as well. We're ttc and I go back and fourth on this decision. Mind you, we live in the suburbs so it's not like we HAVE to walk anywhere if we don't feel like it. Then again, I went to the children's museum the other day and thought, "oh hell! If I had 2 kids right this minute, I'd be stupid to not have a double stroller!!" It's moments like that that make me think that getting one may be worth it.

It isn't the age difference so much as what would you use it for? My oldest two are 23 months apart and I use our double all the time. My oldest didn't stop riding until my third was born, and she lost her seat!
I can't imagine going to the zoo, museums, airport etc without a double!

Ours will be 28 months apart, and we're going to wait and see if we need one. I really enjoy babywearing, so we'll do that with #2 while LO uses the stroller for the first several months at least (through the winter.). We'll reevaluate in the spring. LO may not be into strollers anymore at that point.

My two will be about 30 months apart (fingers crossed!) and I'm thinking about getting a used double for dog walking and maybe a buggy board for our existing Mountain Buggy. I think I would def get a full time double if I had two under two.

I am wondering too and am leaning towards getting a used one for full day family outings. We live in suburbia where you mainly go from car to door so I see no point spending a lot of money on a double stroller brand new.

They will be 28 months apart.

Our girls are 29 months apart and we have the Britax B-Ready. We actually bought the B-Ready and used it as a single when #1 was born and will be buying the second seat so we can use it in a double configuration now that #2 is here. #1 still likes to sit in the stroller for long walks so we think it will still be useful (though in hindsight I think we could have waited since we had no idea what the actual age gap would be).
