We went at just after 2 but my son demonstrated he could sit through a movie at home first. As for the loud, my friend puts headphones for her kid during a movie. Ours is getting tubes next week so we will start with headphones.

@Mrs. Bee: I agree that it depends on the child.

We're not at this point yet, but when my brother and I were little my mom would do a mock-up movie theater at home, we LOVED it, and it could totally be used to gauge your child's readiness. She would make the living room as dark as possible, put our play chairs in the middle of the room, and take tickets from Chuckie Cheese or raffle tickets or something that we would give to her to enter the room and get some popcorn. I remember always thinking it was the coolest thing, it made watching movies at home very special :)

I'm actually talking to her on the phone right now and just reminded her about this, and she laughed and laughed, then told me that was her way of distracting us for a couple of hours so that she could get some schoolwork done (she's a teacher) and that she's glad she was able to turn her keeping us out of her way into a fond childhood memory. LOL

My son is 3 and has never seen a full length film. He gets scared very easily, even when cartoons aren't scary at all. I doubt we will go until he's older, maybe 5 or 6?

Both DD's sat through movies in the theaters at 2.5 yo! Toy Story 3 for DD1 and Frozen for DD2. I think my kids would actually sit through it more at a theater than at home where there's lots of other distractions.

@LuLu Mom: That's true - maybe she would have watched it at the theatre since its different than just sitting on the couch!

We took our son to Despicable Me 2 at around 2.5 and he loved it! His sister was about 6 months old and she actually did OK too. BUT now that she is 17 months and on the move, we tried to take them both to the Lego movie and I had to leave with the little one halfway through :(

I think I would do 3 for LO, i think in a theater is completely different than a normal movie beause it is so big and grand that she would take it all in.

In a theater? I really don't know, I feel like it would be too loud, but he can sit through a movie at age 3.

I think it really depends on the child. We went to one at 3.5 and Charlie's friend couldn't sit through it. But Charlie was used to watching movies from our travels so he was fine. I think Olive could sit through one now at 2 1/2 because she can at home.

Another of Charlie's friends (4) just went to see the Lego movie and couldn't sit through it because it was too loud for him. I think for most kids 4 is a good age! Most of my friends that took 3 year olds couldn't sit through the whole movie.

I haven't taken DS (2.5 yrs) to any movies yet. We rarely watch tv at home and on Christmas eve he barely made it through our special screening at home of Muppet Christmas, 45 minutes. I haven't been to the movies in years so don't have any burning desire to take him. 4 or so sounds like a good age to start!

DS is 22 months and he could sit through one. We live in a small town and there isn't a great movie selection here but the next time a good kids movie comes to town we will take him!

We took DD at 22ish months to see Frozen and she loved it! It was in 3D and she even wore the glasses the whole time. We just made sure to have drinks and snacks for her.

What age will you take LO to the movies for the 1st time?

I didn't take DS until 4.5 and he did great!

I was going to take DD to see Frozen (she just turned 3) because other moms told me their DD's loved it - but I waited. Anyway - I bought the DVD last night and we watched it and she kinda half watched half didn't so now I am glad I didn't take her!

I think I will wait till 4 with her too!
