We have had a gagging/choking incident with apples so I peel them and cut in thin slices and only buy ‘softer’ types like Macintosh. He’s had them since about 1 year old. Never did raisins actually and he’s 3.5 ha! We just don’t like them but I also think of them as a bit of a hazard since they are chewy/sticky. You could try at home maybe just to give some peace of mind?

FWIW I do think if you’ve personally experienced a choking incident, there is a hyper awareness. We’ve had 3 and I still do carefully check food and how I prepare it. So, I feel you on that end. It gets easier as they get older.

We gave apples peeled from about a year. Cut in such away they could hold them with their hands. Raisins never, I was always afraid they would choke and then at their first dentists visit, she confirmed they were top of the list for one of the worst things to give for dental health. They stuck to the teeth and wear done enamel. I was happy as my irrational fear of choking was easily covered up by the dentists advice.

I used to work in a raisin factory; consequently I’m over raisins and forgot to give them to my kids when they were small. So no personal experience feeding them to kids. In googling I found that the AAP took raisins off their list of choking hazards but apples are on there. If you already have choking anxiety reading their policy paper might not be a positive experience for you but I found it interesting. For one, there’s a push to have food manufacturers reformulate foods that are choking hazards. As a food product developer that is news to me and honestly hasn’t been on my radar.

My 13 month old likes both raisins and apples (he has his 8 front incisors, but no molars or canines.) He's never had a problem with raisins and has been eating them for a few months now - I think of them as too small to be a choking hazard (I would associate that more with things like uncut grapes, hot dogs, other larger/windpipe shaped things.) Apples are similar - we peel and give him a big slice and he bites pieces off. He mashes both raisins and apples with his gums. (I've occasionally found a whole raisin in his diaper, but he eats them probably a couple times a week and I find a whole one in his diaper maybe once a month.)

DD is 15 months and has 8 teeth. She's been eating raisins since she was about a year, I think? I only give her a few at a time on her tray so she doesn't put a bunch it and get them all stuck together, that's the only way I could see them being a choking hazard. She does fine with other dried fruits, too, I just make sure she takes bites.

I give her peeled apple slices, apples break up relatively easily. I don't necessarily think she'd choke on the skin, but maybe gag.

I actually wouldn’t think of raisins as a choking hazard, I don’t think they’re big enough. My kids have never had them because we don’t like them but they’ve had craisins since about a year. As for apples, without peels they’ve been eating them since before a year, just gumming on them even before they had teeth. Neither of these things would concern me.

DD is 15 months. I don't know when we gave raisins, but it has been a while.

On the other hand, she had a whole apple before she was 9 months. I was eating it and let her have a bite. DD stole the end of my apple and ate the rest of it.

DS has been eating raisins for a long time (he loves them), I think I introduced them at around a year and a half, but he got all of his teeth early and already had molars. He's been eating apples since around then also, but I always cut the skin off because he used to gag on it.

We didn't introduce raisins until today actually! 2y3m. But i would've been fine trying a year ago.... just never bought them.

He has been biting into whole apples with the supervision of DH since about 15m. I very much prefer to peel and cut though.

The peel is the worse part of an apple because it doesn't chew up well. If it's peeled I wouldn't even worry about it. I didn't really offer raisins to me son until he was probably 18 months, but that is because I don't really keep them as a snack but my parents had some at their house.

I have a 16 month old; I haven't given raisins. My first didn't eat raisins till later either. She has eaten apples; I made she she would chomp them first before swallowing. She doesn't have a ton of teeth either but her gums are pretty strong.

My 16 month old eats peeled apples. He has his 4 molars though and chews pretty well.

I don't like raisins (or any dried fruit really) when they are that little because it can get stuck in their teeth. Our pediatric dentist recommends staying away until it is easier to floss their teeth.

Also, our pediatrician told us if you can squish the food between your thumb and forefinger they can eat it. Their gums are pretty hard since the teeth are right underneath.

DD just moved up to the toddler room, and daycare provides the snacks. One of which is raisins. These stand out to me as a choking hazard, but the internet says they are safe starting around 9 mo. DD is 15 mo, only has 7 teeth, so I have no idea how she could even eat these, unless she is swallowing them whole.

I am hyper aware of choking hazards because I choked on a piece of hard candy when I was 6 and have been terrified ever since. (No hard candy allowed in my house ever!)

Daycare also gives apples. I've seen some of the older kids (20mo) walking around eating a whole apple, but they told me they cut them up for DD, without skin. But again, this seems to be a huge choking hazard to me.

So let me know if I'm freaking out over nothing, or if I should be freaking out....

Thanks!
