I was 5 when I got bunk beds. I had my own room but asked for them and got them anyway. We had a lot of sleepovers and I also liked to be able to sleep in whichever bed I felt like.

I don't think I would go younger than 5. With my own LO, I think she'd have to be closer to 6-7 before I would feel comfortable.

When I was a kid, my cousins were in their room playing in the top bunk of their bunk beds. The younger one somehow fell out, fracturing his skull. He survived, but had to wear a helmet for months. I probably wouldn't do it until age 5-7.

thanks for all your replies!! I really appreciate them.

my boys are pretty adventurous/fearless and I can see them potentially jumping or trying to get up and down too fast, so I've shelved the bunk idea for now :).

there is technically room for two twins side by side, but it would be pretty darn tight.

we'll either go with the kura (will go check it out in person), two small toddler beds (we already have one), or a twin bunk separated for now. we'll see after we move in this weekend! thankfully I don't have to really decide until the autumn.

thank youuuuuu all!

We went ahead and bought the bunk beds but kept them separate as twins for a while. Like what @Mrs. High Heels: did side by side. Could you do that for a while and then bunk later?

We just bunked hers now that she's almost 4. She's sleeping on the bottom though. We let her go up to the top (using the ladder) but I worry about her standing and hitting her head on the ceiling fan.

We put my DS year old in the top of a bunk bed anticipating room sharing. He had just barely turned 3. We put fence things all around the edge and he was fine. We got the Ikea Kura after reading about it here! But he is not much of a daredevil - I have a girlfriend whose boys are 3 years apart and both are a little wild, they were jumping off the top almost immediately when they got a bunk bed.

I think would be more afraid of accidents during general horseplay than falling off while sleeping. Especially with sharing a room; kids get crazier with other kids!

But agree it depends on the child. I guess if your child is calm then it's not a concern. Mine is a tomboy! She just got 5 stitches this weekend from jumping in the couch. :crying:

I know my parents put my younger sister and me in bunk beds when the youngest was born, which would make us about 5.5 and 2.5. I don't recall ever having a problem with the top bunk, but I remember friends coming over and putting my little sister in the top bunk and she fell off (onto the bottom bed, they were L shaped). No one ever got hurt though.

Pretty sure my brother was 4 when we had bunk beds and he was on top, so that's my vote! But totally agree with @Mrs. Tiger: that it depends on the kid. I think my oldest at 2 would love it, though I'd be afraid he'd fall out, haha. He's fearless though.

Do you have the kind of bunks with actual stairs, not ladders? I might consider those.

I think it depends on the kid. If your oldest isn't afraid of being up top and doesn't normally roll off the bed, go for it! I know my almost 4 yo would be too scared.

I was 4 and my sister 2 when our parents moved us to a bunkbed. It had rails so I couldn't fall out. We stayed in the same bed for 10 years :-)

Hmm, tough question. My son is almost 4.5 and he is very cautious. However, I don't think I would feel comfortable with a bunk bed for a few more years. Maybe 6? I would actually be more frightened of my younger LO (who is completely fearless) climbing up and falling/jumping off.

I would not put my almost 4 year old in one simply because I would worry about her falling out of it when climbing down at night, or when playing in it. For a more cautious child, or a bigger child who could handle the ladder easier, I would worry less.

I considered it for when my kids were 4 and 2, but we ultimately decided to do side by side twins. I think something more low to the ground like the IKEA Kura bed would work great for your boys!

I would put the 3.5 year old on the top with a toddler type rail and the 2 year old on the bottom, also with a toddler type rail. It'll be great!

hi everyone -- just wondering what age you would feel comfortable having your LO's share a bunk bed/have a LO on the top bunk?

my boys are 16 months apart, and we were considering putting them in a bunk this fall, when LO3 is arriving, but talking to mom friends they've said the boys are too young. i'm still on the fence! I can accept if i'm totally nuts and should wait a few more years :).

LO's will be 3.5 and 2. I'm not that worried about the actual sleeping/rolling off, but more just general safety. Their room is tiny, so it won't be a place with toys etc, although I imagine they would still play in there from time to time.

ETA: I just checked and Health Canada recommends no top bunks for kids until 6 years old.
