I'm the first of my gfs... so I don't really have a gauge to the "norm".... I'd say late 20s, early 30s though for the majority of people that grew up with/around us~ (DH and I live 20 min away from our hometown)

I am 24 and none of my friends from highschool and in the city I grew up have kids yet. I don't either. Now I live in a smaller town, with a bunch of us transplants who don't have any family in the area. Most of my friends have kids here.. they started when they were about 23-25 I'd say.

I have no idea. I live in a huge city, so it probably varies a lot. I looked up the average maternal age upon first delivery in Texas, and it was 23.9 in 2006. So I guess mid-20s?

The acceptable norm: Married right out of highschool. Baby from 20-24

The actual norm: ...at my 10 year highschool reunion, there will be a LOT of 10-12/13 year olds, and probably only a few married people. A girl I graduated with had two kids by two dads at 18 years old.

I got married a month after my 19th birthday, and had I not miscarried I would have a baby at 20.

I live in a huge military town too, so like PPs have said they start 'em young around here. For comparison, I have a male cousin who is 28 with no kids and people act like he will never have any b/c he's "so old". And my female cousin who is 30 with no kids, the family has already written her off and don't expect grandkids from her

Our town has a military base and a university nearby. Most military families having babies are early 20's; for non-military, most are mid-30's. I'm 27 and a grad student, and DH and I are the only ones among our friends who are married and having a baby. The only people I really know with young children are my professors!

I think "the norm" depends a lot on whether or not you go to college and build a career; not necessarily where you are from.

Of the girls I went to high school with; the ones who didn't go to college and stayed in the small town where our high school was; almost 100% had babies well before 25 (most, 18-23 years old). Many are on second, and even third marriages now.

3 girls, and myself, had babies in June - we were all 30, and we all went to college and built careers. Many others who went off to college are just now getting married, and are not yet TTC.

@mrs. bird: sounds right to me. My mom was 43 when she had me and it was e same for most of her coworkers. My half sisters mom(my step mom) was 42 when she had her. I sort of thought that's how it was! Man did I have a learning curve....

Many people around here get married right out of college (which I actually did, but I graduated late) and start having babies right away. Of our friends with children, they all have older kids, so we are late to the game lol! You wouldn't think 25 was 'old' to start TTC, but around here it is! It's a bit annoying, actually!

MA has the oldest maternal age upon first delivery in the US. as of 2006, the average for the state was 27.7 yrs old, i imagine it's still similar if not slightly older now. sounds right to me. some start earlier, but many of those do not have college degrees, many start later who have been in school a long time and have spent time in their chosen profession.

My youngest friend to have hers was 26. I'm the next at 27, none of my other friends have kids, and my cousins have all seemed to have theirs in their early 30's. So I'd say late 20's early 30's is most typical.

It seems like it mostly depends on if you are college educated or not. Almost all my friends are 27 and up for their first children. But going to college and grad school really does set you back! Those loans, yikes! And if you didn't go to college, it seems like they have them really young here--late teens, early 20's. The midwest pops 'em out pretty early :)

I'm about average, maybe a little early (by a year? maybe two). It's not uncommon for women at my work to wait until they are 30 to have their first.

mid twenties I think... most people marry young, within 2-4 years after graduating HS (or RIGHT after graduating college) but don't have babies for a few years.

I am definitely the only one from my graduating class to have a baby right now. Makes things so weird when I see them around haha!

In the Military its common to get married REALLY young and have kids really young too. At 29 & 3o most Military (or our Military friends) people our age have school age kids.
DH had his daughter with his first marriage when he was 21...which is not that uncommon.
