Every kid is different, so I can't say I have a cutoff, maybe like kindergarten. My daughter is turning 2 next month and still nurses at least 4 times a day (she "still" nurses to sleep and for nap, too) and I don't really see an end in sight yet with her. She is very attached to it and asks for "mook" often especially if she is upset or tired. I never had a goal in mind, but I didn't really expect her to still be nursing - I thought she would lose interest somewhere around 18m but it never happened!

@stargal: I think for me, maybe 18 months. Just personal preference. If I could do just bedtime maybe that could go longer. If lo wanted to nurse frequently after a year Id honestly be more likely to want to wean. If it was infrequently I would feel like I'm giving less of my body up then I'd be more likely to stick with it. I think by 18 months (plus pregnancy) i would selfishly just want my body to myself.

It's funny - when I weaned my daughter at 28 months, she didn't seem too old at all. I was just sick of it. But now I see children that age and think that they're way too old. Funny how your perspective shifts.

Before having lo, I would've said a year. We're still nursing twice a day at 16 months and I'd like to wean fully by 18 months, but that's not because it's too old, just because I think it'll help her gain weight and I'm done. I've been pretty surprised by how many "you're STILL breastfeeding?!?!" comments I've gotten, especially from moms. I don't have a magic age in mind

I’m about to wean a 25 month old. That said, we’ve only done about once per day right after she wakes up since about 16 months. Lately she’s so busy she sometimes that she forgets. I’ve gone back and forth about how I feel about it since 18 months. I’m ready now though. I don’t think I would want to do this past 3.

We weaned at 14 months. That was good for me. Sometimes I missed it, up until about 18 months or so. So I guess I could go to 18 months. After that I think I'd be done. I don't really judge anyone who breastfeeds longer, but it's not for me.

I'm not really sure. DS is 11 months this week and we are still nursing often. He's been sick a lot and we have had some major setbacks with solids, so I expect I will keep nursing a while longer. I'm pretty sure I'll want to stop by 2, but maybe not.

My cutoff is 12-15 months. I never nursed, but I wouldn't have nursed longer than 15 months. I would've weaned as soon as my LO was drinking enough whole milk (just like I weaned the formula).

I dried up at 15 months. I think whatever works for other moms and babies is great, but for me, when I look at my now 21 month old I feel like it would be a little uncomfortable to be nursing her still. But maybe if next baby is a little more calm/cuddly I'd feel differently.

after breastfeeding for 2 years and 2 months and knowing i could have went longer, it is hard to answer. Before i got that far, i probably would have said less than that. I weaned at that time because i was TTC and i am still not pregnant, so i kind of wish i let him self-wean. i now plan to do that with #2 whenever that may be!

so for now my short answer is high school ;)

He self weaned at 10 months (or went on a nursing strike which I was not interested in pushing through) and that felt plenty long for me. Since he was borderline failure to thrive, I found that I was able to relax so much more knowing how many mls he was getting, rather than constantly worrying about my supply. And what do you know, he started stacking on the weight when he went on formula/cows milk. Honestly I wish we'd stopped earlier as it had become a source of stress for my family.
That said, without the weight gain/supply issues I would have probably kept going til 13/14 months maybe? I was definitely ready to have my body back and not worry about taking medications and drinking. I just got over a terrible cold and it was SO nice to be able to take all the super strength drugs again!

For me, close to 2. I weaned my first at 8.5 months, and remember thinking she seemed way too old and too big to nurse at 22 months old, when I brought her sister home and she was super curious about watching her sister nurse. I'm still nursing my youngest at 14 months, and she doesn't seem too big yet, so maybe I just felt that way because it had been so long since I'd nursed my eldest.

Miss A is still nursing once a day at 2.5 (just before her nap) but I feel like she'll probably wean once she drops her nap and starts afternoon preschool in the next six months, so my "cutoff" age is 3-4. Fortunately Miss A has always had pretty good nursing manners and isn't interested if we're not home which has no doubt made it easier for me to continue bf'ing her.

We weaned at 2.5 bc I was pregnant and realy uncomfortable.. Before nursing him I probably would have said two but it was like the longer we nursed the more it was just normal and not 'too old.' I started with boundries pretty young though so there was no shirt pulling or demanding. After about 18mo we only nursed at home/grandparents houses and by two it was just at nap and nighttime unless he was sick.
