for many months, he was just waking up once per night and he finally started doing 12 hours straight around 13-14 months. he did the odd night or two starting at around 11-12 months.

eta. he is now 24 months and still goes through phases (for maybe a night or two or even up to a week or more) where he will wake during the night, especially if he sick, teething or maybe even a growth spurt. but we get through it (sort of, lol), and he goes back to sleeping through.

I should clarify that "starting to drop them" for me means she's going from 2-3 per night, to 1, most nights now, at 9 months. I'm guessing within the next 3 months or so she'll probably drop them all...hopefully!

Around 6 1/2 months he went from feeding somewhere between 3 and 5 to always eating after 5, and lately at almost 8 months more often than not he sleeps til 6 or a little later, which I consider STTN. Its been awesome!!

He quit all nightfeeds on his own at 11m when one day he just started STTN. We didn't do anything to support it (except to always offer a bottle of water before nursing him - no idea if that had any effect).

Timely question-I was going to post something similar!

LO is 7 months, and she is still waking up to eat at least 2 times every night. I know that at least once, she is genuinely hungry, because she is draining me. The other time, it's hit or miss. Sometimes, she'll snack for a while and pass out, but other times, she really does want to eat. We've had to delay solids a bit, so I think that's part of it.

Sigh...we'll sleep someday...right? ;)

DS#2 is 5 months and wakes 1-2 times a night to feed and I will feed until he drops them on his own.

I did it at just over 7 months. I started by reducing the length of feeds, then I just stopped, and would rock him back to sleep any time he woke. It was quite early but he was storming up through the centiles, and when he got up for the day he wasn't hungry for hours so I felt the time was right.

My 7 month old still eats once at night. He's slept through on multiple occasions, so I know that he CAN go all night, but I'm not ready to wean him yet. Hopefully he will do it on his own. If not, I will think about when to wean -- 9-12 months perhaps.

@Mrs tartan: Around 8.5 months. We just started offering less and less (bottle fed) at his night wakings starting at 6 months, and eventually he decided it wasn't worth it. He will rarely do a night wakening at 11 months now, but if he does, I know it's because he's truly hungry.

I think it depends on the child. Both LOs were EBF, and I let them take the lead. LO1 dropped night feeds and started STTN between 6-8 weeks. LO2 did not consistently drop night feeds and STTN until closer to 6 months. LO2 was much smaller at birth, so she needed the extra calories.

He dropped the feed on his own at 12 weeks (had done it a few times starting at 10 weeks). I have heard similar to Jetsa that many breastfed babies end up needing that night feed longer due to breastmilk's quick digestion. The pediatrician said that we should let it happen organically.

He would've never dropped them all, he was waking 1-2 times to eat because I'd feed him. I dropped them at 11 months, 1 night of no midnight snack and he slept through to 5am.

I've read breastfed babies need to eat in the middle of the night until 9 months. Breastmilk is digested faster than formula.

Almost exactly at nine months. I tried weaning her before, using the trick of cutting her off a minute or two early for each nursing session, and it was an utter fail (crying on and off for two hours until I fed her again). So I let her take the lead and kept one night feeding until then. At nine months she just stopped waking up to eat.
