My school didn't have an esl program when I was in kindergarten so I was placed in a regular class. I didn't even understand what the teacher was saying, so definitely could not read. They taught reading in kindergarten, but I was very good at memorizing anything that rhymes. Of course, pretty much all the books for that age range rhyme, and I tricked my teacher into thinking I was the best reader in the class by memorizing every book she read us. It was my dad who noticed that when I "read" my eyes looked at the pictures instead of following the words.
