I'm second guessing my decision now because I'm taking my 2 year old tomorrow! It's a local performance and it's a 10am show that is filled with lots of field trips. She's a pretty mellow kid and loves ballet and music so I think it will be alright. I'll let you know though!

I think it depends on the type of performance. If it is a really fancy show, I would say 5 or 6. The professional troupe near me used to have a kid show and I would say no minimum age for that.

@Mrs. Microscope: 😂
I think my almost 4 year old would like it now but I'm gonna wait until next year because she's still a bit squirrelly and tickets are $$.

My parents took me at 4. To the fancy one in Seattle. We had balcony seats, and when the nutcracker appeared I jumped up, spill a jumbo box of junior mints over the rail onto the people below and screamed at the top of my lungs "it's the nutcracker!" so yeah, I loved it, but I didn't get to go back until I was 7 or 8.

I took him to the very beginning of it last year (we had a family friend in the party scene.) He did okay for about 45 minutes and then was DONE (so he had just turned 3). I had anticipated that, and was only staying to watch the friend. We went to a basketball game after, where he sat with rapt attention. I won't take him this year (family friend is only in the second act, and that just won't happen.) I don't know that I'd take him again, but if I did, I'd wait for 6 or 7. I think he could handle it at 5 (or even now) and sit through the whole thing, he just wouldn't enjoy it.

My friends who have girls went with their daughters to the same show and I think made it through (they had both just turned 3 as well.)

LO's preschool sold tickets to a late morning weekday performance so I decided to take him this year (he's 3). He can sit through a whole movie so I'm hoping it goes okay. If not we'll just leave early and run around outside.

I took my daughter last year. She was 2, almost 3. She talked about it ALL YEAR and was so captivated by it. So we are going again this year. All the dancing and music. You may be surprised how entertained they may be by it.

I think 4.5 is pretty appropriate. My coworker started taking her daughter last year when she was only 2.5 and she did pretty well. It's one of those shows where pretty much everybody there expects there to be a lot of little kids, particularly at an afternoon performance. Just be ready to roll with any challenges and accept you might need to bail out.

We're taking DD this weekend for her 3rd birthday, we will leave early if we need to. But she's VERY into ballerinas so she might sit through it...we'll see.

I am taking my daughter this weekend ( she is almost 4.5 ) and I am pretty nervous. I would feel better about an afternoon performance but ours is at night which also make sit past her bedtime. I will let you know how it goes

We brought my LO last year when she was 2.5. It was a. Kid friendly performance and we were on the aisle so I knew we could leave if necessary. I also brought quiet snacks. She did great for the entire first act, though moved between her own seat and mine and dhs laps. Second act was a little dicey and we probably should have left but I wanted to see it! There were lots of other kids in the audience, many older and behaving worse, so I figured it was ok. I'm bringing her again this Sunday, to a high school production.

I would think at 4.5 you can do it but accept that you may have to leave early.

I'm thinking of taking my 4.5 year old to see the local performance of The Nutcracker this year. I'm just not sure she'd make it through the whole performance. But I"m thinking if I get aisle seats we could just sneak out when/if she starts getting antsy.

What age did you (or will you) take your LO to a performance like The Nutcracker?
