It depends somewhat on your field, but I know in mine job openings are only really posted publicly after the position has already been filled - as sort of a weird formality where they're required to interview extra people even though they already know who the position is for. So if you're just applying to posted openings, you'll rarely be an actual candidate for the job.

The secret to getting a real position is networking. Through alumni in the field, through local meetings/conferences where you might meet someone, etc. It's much less organized and formal than in days gone by. Like someone said above, make sure everyone you know hears about your search and your qualifications. Call up people you barely know if you think they might have a connection that could help you. Don't be shy about it.

Can you go back to the Career Services Center at the school you got your degree? They can put you through a mock interview (even on the phone if you are away)- and they can give you some very candid and honest feedback on your interviewing style and answers.

I also applied to 16 staffing agencies in 3 days when I moved out here. I'm a big fan. They too can provide feedback on your interviewing.

Do you have a linkedin profile?

What kind of feedback are you getting, if any? Do you know if they went with an internal candidate, are in a budget freeze, etc? That information can be very useful.

Is it an experience thing? Are you willing to enter a training program?

Like others I would try a head hunter - my DH found a great job that way!

Also, do you have any real life experience in your field or just an education? I know when I graduated (years ago) I applied every where and had tons of interviews and in the end they wanted someone with experience! Ahhhh...... how do I get experience when no one will hire me?!?!?

Finally I took and entry level job in my field and then worked my way up.

Good luck and my fingers are crossed for you!

I am so sorry to hear  My friend was really discouraged recently too; she had quit her comfortable job to go back to law school, and by the time she was done a lot of her savings were gone & she has brand new debt... She passed the bar but took her a long time to find work. And the work she finally found was a trial basis so it wasn't a full time offer right away and she doesn't get paid as much. She was so discouraged this whole time wondering if she made the wrong choices, but you have to keep going! There is almost no room to feel discouraged because you just have to keep sending those resumes out and keep interviewing and keep your head high and think positive! Many industries are still suffering so do not think that this is you, at all! I would definitely see if you can work with a recruiter/head hunter... And they can advise if there is something more you can be doing, or to go into a slightly different direction or something. Best of luck!!

I was in your spot over a year ago! I eventually said screw my degree which was getting me nowhere and feeling rejected, and didsomething completely different than what i imagined. I ended up liking it much more and finding new passions and goals. Im not sure what your field is and if its your dream .. But my reccomendation would be to be open minded on the job search and not be afraid to step outside your comfort zone.
Good luck in whatever you do, i know something will work out!

Don't give up!!!

When I graduated (with my Bachelor's) it took me 11 months to find a job. ELEVEN. So I know exactly how you are feeling - right down to the part where you've stopped communicating with friends! It is SO incredibly hard but you really have to try not to take it personally. Job hunting is a numbers game. Keep applying, keep interviewing and keep your chin up. You will get a job eventually I promise.
In my case I did reach a point where I started applying for anything and everything even if it was beneath me or had nothing to do with my degree. I ended up taking an entry level job (receptionist) and keeping it for 2 years. I needed a job, any job to get me started! And the bright side is while it wasn't my dream job, I did work with the greatest group of people ever and they are all still dear friends to me.

I'd keep going, but also carve some time out for yourself so your whole day every day is not about job hunting. Exercise, do your nails, get into a tv show or a book series, pick up a hobby, go out with friends. And NETWORK if at all possible. Tell everyone you know that you need a job and what your qualifications are, you never know who they might know!

((((big hugs))))

The world is cruel that it placed you and I on opposite sides! I'm in the exact opposite position. I'm hiring for my department and cannot find anyone. The last phone interview I had, I set up an interview in the office and he didn't even show up!

I hope something comes to you soon

The last time I was looking for work, I took on a part time position a few nights a week. Just to make some extra money and get out of the house. I ended up meeting some great people who are still my friends to this day and even after finding my permanent full time employment, I kept my part time job for 7 years.

Boo! Getting rejected sucks. Maybe you could reach out to your grad school advisor and ask if there's something they notice that you are doing wrong or could improve upon?

My first thought is that they don't want someone fresh from school, but then why grant you the interview?

Hope your luck turns around soon!

I'm sorry, that really sucks! Have you tried working with a recruiter? The one DH worked with gave him some really good feedback on interviewing.

That sucks, I'm so sorry!!!!

Is there anyone in your life as a friend, colleague, professional, someone in your field, etc. who would be willing to give you 100% honest feedback? Or maybe would it be possible (bold!) to contact one of the interviewers and say you are always trying to improve and could s/he give you any pointers in general?

Warning, this is a woe-is-me kind of post, so feel free to not read if you've met your whining quota for the day

The story is this: I finished graduate school in May, moved back to the state where I grew up at the end of June, and began seriously looking for a job in the area. I've had SO MANY interviews, and now, here we are, in the middle of January, and still nothing. I'm beginning to wonder if there is something seriously wrong with me. I always feel like I am well-prepared when I go in, I know a lot about the organization, I have questions prepared in advance, I'm polite, I have a good rapport with the interviewers, I dress in a suit, I send a polite "Thanks for the opportunity to interview" email the following day, I know I'm well-qualified and would do a great job, etc etc.

I'm just starting to feel crushed, and taking things really personally. I know I shouldn't, but I can't help it, you know? We're down to the last couple hundred dollars in our bank account, and I honestly don't know what I'm going to do. DH is working part-time, but it's honestly been difficult for him, too, since he's not that fluent in English yet (moved here from South America a little more than a year ago) and only has a HS diploma.

I'm thankful that we're able to stay in a property my parents own, rent-free, so at least there isn't that stress. But I'm starting to feel like a huge drag to everyone in my life. I've stopped communicating with pretty much all of my friends, because it's frankly embarrassing when they ask "oh how have you been?" and the only thing I can answer is "pretty much the same, got rejected again" etc etc.

I honestly feel like I'm at the point where I'm ready to give up, and just find some menial, entry-level job that has nothing to do with my training. I just feel like such a failure. I'm normally the eternal optimist, but these days I just feel all negativity, all the time.

Sorry for the novel, didn't mean for it to be that long, but I just needed to vent. I feel a lot better now, thanks
