When DD was in daycare, I would just sign her in, drop off her stuff, and jet. The whole reason she was there is that I was working... and I needed to go to work. I would occasionally chat with the teacher for a second during pickup if there was something they needed to tell me about her day, but it never lasted longer than a couple of minutes. I would have no idea what the other parents were talking to the teachers about for long periods of time hahahaha.

I'm fairly chatty with the teacher and the assistant director. I really like them and they give me good info about LO's development. I've also befriended another mom there.

I'm pretty quick at drop off cause 1. LO meltsdown so its in and out ASAP 2. I have to go to work 3. The drop off area is hectic...

At pickup, I'm usually just getting a quick report about what LO was up to and how he behaved/ate/napped. I chat with other parents briefly sometimes.

@DenverMom: Agreed. I'm not a chatty person in general, but I've gotten to be on friendlier terms with LO's teachers and they share info with me that they probably shouldn't ;) but I appreciate knowing.

Also, lately LO doesn't want to leave right away at pick-up. They are all playing outside and she wants to show me around and play a little more. So I stick around and play with her or talk to the teachers, but never more than 10-15 min.

DH does drop off and never exchanges more than a few words or a short anecdote with her teacher, but only because he's in a hurry.

Morning drop-off is quick, I basically put LOs stuff away, and let her teacher know when she last ate. I try to point LO in the direction of a toy or book or something. The drop-off is more about getting her settled than talking to the teacher (who she is only with for an hour or two in the am and then moves to the next classroom when her main teacher arrives).

In the afternoon I pick up early so there are no other parents there and I have a chance to chat with her teacher more. I am a lot more chatty with her teacher than I thought I would be because I can be relatively shy! But I try to find out a little about her day and discuss anything different we or they are doing. But still we're talking just a few minutes, she has other kids to be watching! I also like to interact with the other kids a bit because 6 littles toddling around and smiling and waving at me is SO CUTE!

I am never chatty in the mornings because it is hectic and I don't want LO to start melting down. I'm trying to get going ASAP. We only chat if the teacher brings something up with us to discuss (which is almost never).

In the afternoons, we pick up so late that her teacher is already gone for the day, so we only meaningfully discuss LO at parent/teacher conferences 2x a year.

I'm chatty at times. I like to get to know the teachers on a more personal basis, so I have a better idea of who my kids are spending their days with. By doing this I've learned more about the disciplinary tactics used in the classroom, some of the kids' favorite meals, when they think the baby is ready for a faster flow nipple, etc. I also found that the teachers were more open with me about management issues at the daycare, which caused me concern and that I then addressed with the director.

I'm Pretty chatty at both pick up and drop off. I like to pass along any info and I want to hear about his day at pickup. I've noticed it's about 50/50 chatty and non chatty.

I don't do drop off, but for pick ups I don't really chat with the teachers. They have 5 other 2 year olds to deal with, though, and now I'm hauling around a new baby, so everybody is pretty occupied with preventing all the toddlers from smothering my baby. I usually just ask if he had a good day.

@Miss Ariel: lol yes! I wonder what they talk about too. And sometimes parent will just be sitting there with their kid - I wonder why they don't leave and linger at pick-up

I keep dropoffs quick. I'll say hello to the teachers, let them know anything that may affect their day and goodbye to the kids with a kiss.

I usually chat with LO2's daycare teachers when i pick him up because i like to know what his day was like. If LO1's teachers are not with another parent or busy then i will use that opportunity to see how things are going with her. But i wouldn't say i'm like that all the time.

I once had this conversation with LO1's old daycare director - she said i never smile and never stay and chat (with her). I was really annoyed because back then dropoffs were awful (crying/screaming) and we were always in a rush to get to our office. I wouldn't worry about it too much!

I'm super chatty, so I often have long conversations with the teachers, but I'm usually the only one. Most people drop and run. It's usually more chaotic at pick-up, so I try to have most conversations at drop off (when there are usually only 2 or 3 other kids there).

I rarely do drop off and never pick up unless she's sick in the middle of the day... She is the last one in so I never see any other parents. And since I don't drop off often, she's very clingy to me so I try to just put everything away and ninja out.

She only goes for half days so I know DH rarely sees other parents at pick up. I think my mom found out that half her class are kids of teachers there.

In the morning; LO is the only one arriving for her class so I usually have a quick conversation with the teacher since I have to go to work.

and at pickup it depends on the teacher as to how much information we receive. LO was the only one at pickup yesterday so we heard all about her day from the teacher because she had time (she had spent over an hour solo with LO)

Yes to this! Sometimes at drop off I'll see other parents having long conversations with the teachers and wonder what they're talking about or if I should be doing the same. I normally just tell her teacher to have a good day. Sometimes she'll tell me something cute she did which I appreciate, except I'm normally running late so I try to keep coming conversation to a minimum.

LO goes to preschool, and we drop his belongings in his cubby when we walk in. We say hello to his teachers. I sign in and indicate the time I'm dropping off. He signs in by writing his name, and I wait until he finishes before I say goodbye to him. Usually the teachers will initiate a conversation if they have something to tell me. Otherwise, I keep it simple. Same goes with pick up.

I'm not a small talk person outside of close friends. Not at work, not at the park, etc.

So this carries over to daycare drop-off, pick-ups. Sometimes I leave and have this awful feeling wondering if the teachers think I'm rude, don't care about my son, etc. I'm curious how you approach it?

I usually say good morning, and pass along anything important (etc: he already had breakfast), then I'm gone. This morning I have felt awful bc there were several people in the room and I did nothing more than make eye contact across the room with his teacher. :/ We also often struggle with crying drop offs so I try to get the hell out before he has time to realize what's happening.
