@PurpleUnicorn: We're still not as good with schedule as we could be! But we're better than we were and we've noticed that every little bit helps!

@Pumpkinspice: our room is right next to L's so we still whisper in our room out of fear of waking him because the walls are so thin! so no TV for us too, lol. i hear ya. and that's that she is STTN!

@MrsF: we've been doing the fan thing too but hasn't worked. at least not on its own, maybe the air con and mattress will work in tandem. i hope.

@Mrs. Jacks: thanks for the link! i could totally relate to all the thing you did "wrong" because I think i was like in the beginning. now i am much more rigid about routine and schedule. and i see a clear difference in our days when we stick to the routine perfectly versus not. i am still learning to plan my entire day around his naps.

Gosh, it might be easier to list what we haven't done!
I've installed a thermometer with a humiditiy indicator in the room to make sure it's not too warm or too cold.
I've done blackout panels
White noise, humidifier, air purifier
sleepsacks of cotton, fleece, bamboo depending on the season
nighlight so the room isn't pitch black in the middle of the night

I have a blog post that I just finished that touches on this somewhat :)

My short answer is that there are several environmental things that I've done wrong (and right) with respect to environment. These include a good room temperature, sleep cues, white noise and clothing. For more detail check out the blog post when it is available.

Her crib is in our room so we had to adjust to our normal bedtime habits. The biggest one was not being able to watch tv when we go to bed. It was distracting for her and waking her up.
We also realized she likes the white noise that the box fan gives off so the fan is always turned on and the lights turned out. She is also not a back sleeper, so she is put on her side in her boppy pillow and is now consistently sleeping 7 to 9hour stretches at night.

Our central air isn't hooked up yet so some nights I have to leave her door open so it's cooler in there. For some reason her room is the warmest in the hot weather and coolest in the cold weather - drives me crazy!

L used to STTN. Then he switched from bassinet to pnp and then to crib in his room and he basically has not STTN since - only with the odd exception. I figure part of it is due to his increased distraction during the day and so he needs a night feeding now. But when he wakes sometimes 2 - 3 times a night and we see him on the monitor worming around, he doesn't look comfortable. Also, since the weather has gotten warmer, it gets quite humid and warm in his room at night sometimes.

Based on these issues we have decided to get him a better quality mattress and an air conditioner for his room. We also got blackout curtains and I think they have helped with naps - but I think the curtains also lock in the humidity, despite leaving the window open and turning on a fan.

Our new mattress is not here yet, nor has the air conditioner been installed so I can't say if these things work yet, but i have testimony from other friends that they made a significant difference so we are giving it a shot and have high hopes.

I am just wondering if anyone has tried anything else to make the room more "sleep-friendly"/comfortable for their baby?

ETA: I have high hopes for the mattress in particular because when we first transitioned him to the crib his morning naps fluctuated from 30 to 120 minutes, with an average of 45 minutes. When he was in the bassinet, he was sleeping 1.5-2 every morning for his nap. Well, since we have a queen size bed in his room as well, i've just started putting him for naps in the bed (with pillows to block the edges and i watch him on the video monitor the entire time)....and he has gone back to 2 hour naps! He doesn't even roll or twitch during these naps! But when he is in the crib at night, he rolls all over and looks like he is trying to get comfortable! If only i could let him sleep there all night....but of course I won't dare let him sleep on the bed if i can't watch him....
