Governors island would also be a fun spot for families. You can rent all these different kinds of bikes and pedal with the baby around the small island And picnic on the lawn if you get tired. Great views and easy to get to.

Oh I just remembered... There is a charming children's bookstore in Chelsea on W.18th Street... Books of Wonder. They have a bunch of books signed by author and a cute cafe in the store, Alice's Tea Cup. They have storytime too, but I've never been. http://www.booksofwonder.com/nycstorelocandhours.asp

I took my LO there to browse books and we got a copy of Dream Big, Little Pig signed by author/ice skater Kristi Yamaguchi! Then she napped and I enjoyed a lunch special at the cafe complete with a yummy sandwich, gourmet iced tea and a yummy lemon cupcake with goat cheese/basil frosting. So good! Def not a "tourist trap" experience!

Children's Museum of Manhattan can be fun too. My LO loved their giant Lite Brite (as did I!). 3rd floor would be age-appropriate for a 1 year old.

You have pretty good suggestions already... I would just like to say Serendipity isn't all that anyway, especially for babies because strollers are banned there! It's such a small and always crowded space...

@Honeybee: We're going in July so we'll be super hot too. Those all sound awesome. Wish we had more time there!

@jessiejo17: I've been wanting to take LO to the zoo! She's still pretty young, but I feel like she's old enough that she'll notice the animals at least. For a while she completely ignored my pup but now she always has her eyes on him, and even tries to pet him.

@Mrs. Bee: @regberadaisy: Awesome, thanks! Street performers are always fun too.

We went to NYC last summer when DD was about 15 months old; it was August, so it was super hot. Let's see, her favorite things:

1. At the top of Rockefeller Center, they have this room with the coolest motion lights. The whole room is tiled in white tiles that light up around you as you move; DD loved running around in there, and we probably stayed there for at least 1/2 an hour. Plus, it's way less crowded that the Empire State Building, and you get just as good of views.

2. Times Square Toys R Us has a Ferris Wheel; that was pretty fun (and air conditioned!).

3. FAO Schwartz has the big, light-up piano. They let in groups of people for about 15 minutes at a time, which was really aboput DD's attention span at that age.

4. We also went to the Central Park zoo. That was fun, and right up DD's alley!

@regberadaisy: Oh, yeah, we don't buy anything. We go there to get out of the cold or rain and to see the huge stuffed animals.

I wonder if the circus will be in town! LOVE Ringling Bros, is 1 too young for the circus??

@bluestriped bee: I think the HUGE Ferris Wheel at Toys R US is fun for kids of all ages! :) FAO is sooo overpriced for me and the coolest thing is the floor piano.

@regberadaisy: We've passed the Toys R Us store but I think with all the congestion around Times Square, we never go in there. We should check it out next time we are there. I think FAQ Schwartz sticks out for us because it's close to central park and it stands out. Well, that and the apple store.

I would go to the Times Square Toys R US over FAO Schwarz honestly! Serendipity? Dylans' Candy Bar?
If she was older I would say Alice's Tea Cup for tea! :)

We'll be going to NY for a wedding right before my LO turns one. We'll be pretty booked up with visiting family, but I just wanted to know if there's something super fun that we just can't miss. It's going to be in July, so hot! I'm sure we'll go to central park, maybe go to a zoo. I'd like to take the Circle Line tour because my husband hasn't done that yet. What do you NYC mommy's and daddy's do with your LO's? My sister is in Park Slope so we'll be around there too.
