@Mrs. Tricycle: when we go out to eat I always leave room for dessert! Or I take one to go. :)
@Coco Bee: do you have any Greek or Mediterranean or middle eastern restaurants near you? They always have baklava on their dessert menu. Or a lot of gourmet bakeries do as well.
@MrsRcCar: mmm that sounds really similar to this cake my brother gets from this Long Island Bakery. 20 something thin layers of crepe like goodness! It is very light & airy. The one he gets is from a Italian Bakery I think and it's not German chocolate. More vanilla. He gets one for almost every family gathering!

My favorite dessert that my family makes is a 12 layer german chocolate ate. It is extremely rich and so just off the wall amazing. 12 layers sound like a lot but really the layers are more like crepes that actual cake layers. We also make around christmas.

@T-Mom: @betsyboop: yes, gulab jamun is the dessert with balls in very sweet syrup... I have a major sweet tooth, but that dish is usually too sweet for me, but it is yummy! rasmalai has cheese balls in a creamy sauce, and kheer is rice pudding. And @T-Mom: yes, I love kulfi too, but I haven't had it in so long that I couldn't remember the name! Someone once told me it's like super creamy ice cream because it has very little water content. My favorite restaurant in NY that used to make it so well closed a few years ago and I haven't found anywhere that offers it freshly made in-house since...

I love trying new foods and consider myself an adventurous eater, but haven't had many of these desserts (and I loooove sweets), especially the Asian ones - maybe because I'm always too full from dinner to order dessert when we go out to eat?

I've got to work on this! Man, what an awful mission to undertake. :)

@caffeinated: It's a Filipino dessert of shaved ice, milk and candied what-not's in it, topped with ice cream and a piece of flan and crispy rice for crunch. Halo-halo literally means "mix, mix" in Tagalog. It's what you do before you eat it :)

The purple stuff is a purple yam flavored ice cream, but you usually get to pick which flavor you want.

The tops are more sweet/carmelized... And the pastry cup is more flaky.... just like the pp described. Oh and the inside is more fluffy.

In NYC, check them out at Choco Bolo. They are called Pastel de Nata. Best thing on the menu there, even though their specialty is chocolate cake.
