That is a lot of change! Ours starts at 16 months and that toddler block is the shortest, but otherwise it's by year:

16 m - 24 m
2s
3s
4s (PreK 1)
5s (PreK 2)

Ages 1-6 are all together. The 3+ year olds get special instruction everyday while the younger kids nap, and they can enter certain rooms for older kids that houses small Legos, for instance, but they're all basically together.

Ours was
Infant: 6 weeks-15 months
Young toddler: 12 months-27 months
Older toddler: 21 months-3 years
Preschool: 33 months - 4 years
Pre-K: 4 years until kindergarten

The overlap was to account for developmental differences and whether they had a spot for the kids to move up to. Kids moved up around their birthdays, not as a group.

The daycare DD will be starting at in September has similar age groupings but mainly moves kids up in August/September unless there are special circumstances.

@Mae: ours are nearly identical I think. I also wish it wasn't a lot of changes. Plus we're delaying potty training which erks me because LO seems ready and I don't want to miss the window but they said even though there are potties in the 18-24 room since the kids don't use them she won't be successful. And she shares her spot with a baby 4 mo younger than her (how we got around the no parttime rule) so she always moves up late.

That seems like a lot of change! My kids center does

Infants = 6 weeks-12/18 months (kids move up at 12 months + walking, so they can be in Infants up until 18 months)
Toddlers = 12/18 months - 24ish months (they can move on when ready but have to be 23 months at least)
Twos = 24ish-30-40 months (they move when ready but must be at least 2.5 years + potty trained)
Primary = 2.5years-6 years (most kids are 3-5.5 years though)

These were ours but they have always confused me.

Infant - 3m to 15mo
Toddler 1 - 15mo to 20mo*
Toddler 2 - 20mo* to 2 years 9 months
Preschool - 2 years 9 months to age 6

The 20mo* has a star because that's what it supposedly was when my LO was there, but I know for fact that there is a bottleneck in Toddler 2 and there are several toddlers that are at least 2 years old still hanging out in Toddler 1. Meanwhile, my own LO got caught in a bottleneck from Infant to Toddler 1, so she didn't move over until she was 18 months, which meant she had only 2 months in that room.

@Mae: Part of why we liked our new daycare is because they stay in the class for the entire year.

Infant 1 - Babies that start July - December
Infant 2 - Babies that start Jan - June

From there they move to either Toddler A or Toddler B (as a group) and keep moving in that group pretty much until they go to K!

We can enroll in all-day Kindergarten at their daycare or enroll in 1/2-day at the school with before/after care at daycare.

I don't know how the preschool rooms are divided, but from 0-3 they are split same as yours and I also wish the kids didn't have to change rooms so often. My son is in a crowded age group so he doesn't always get a spot in the next room right away. He was 17 months before he got into the 12-18 month room, then had to move up after less than 4 months. It's not my fave.

Those are very narrow age groups!

DD1s daycare was basically split by year -- 0-12m, 12-24m. But they also would take availability, development, and when their friends moved into account.

DD2s now is 0-15m, 15-24m, and then by year. I think DD2s they just like to have them all walking (usually) by the time they move up from infants to young toddler.

In the fall they will both be in a Montessori program which is split 16m-3y, and 3-6y. I really like the wider age ranges because I think they learn a lot from looking up to the older kids and then helping the younger kids.

Ours is 1-3 and 3-6. That's pretty common here. Some small daycares put all 1-6 yos together. And there is practically no daycare for children under 1 since people get 1 year of mat leave.

There are no hard rules; moving up depends on space, timing and the individual. Rough breakdowns are:

Infant room: baby - about 14 months
Toddler: 14ish months - just over 2, like 26 months
Preschool 1: 26ish months - 3
Preschool 2: 3-4
Pre-k: 4-5

The goal is to spend about a year in each room, give or take. They don't base moving up on walking, potty training or any other "skill"

My LOs aren't in daycare, but I used to work at one right out of college. The age groups were 0-6 months, 6-12 months, 12-18 months, 18-24 months, 24 months-whenever they were potty trained, potty trained-3.5ish (my class), 3.5-4, and 4-5. From my class on up, they moved up once a year in August.

It just depends on the way the numbers fall. Like for example, DS1 is in a class where all of the kiddos are within 3 months of each other (January-March birthdays) They change teachers/classes in August not with age or skill.

Ours goes by the state ratio guidelines. So infant is up to 15m, then toddler goes to 2.9y. Preschool and pre-k are after that, but I don't remember those specific brackets. When we were at a larger center there were many more rooms and more transitions.

Mine does groupings by 6 mos age and ability to some degree. Example: An early potty trained tot may skip the "wet room," which are 18-24 mos olds. I like that the four baby room teachers all cover for each other and even if a room will be different at least the teacher is familiar.

I feel like our daycare moves the kids between rooms so fast! The rooms are:

0-12mo
12-18 mo
18-24 mo
24-30 mo
30-36 mo
3 yrs
4 yrs
5 yrs

I wish they would combine the four toddler groups into two age groups (even if they had two of each age group!) so they didn't have to move every 6 months :(
