Not only does it depend on the doctor, it depends onthe airline too and what their policy is. I have to fly to the UK at 32 weeks with a single pregnancy that has been totally free of any complications. The airline required that my doctor fill out a form which they evaluate because I am past 28 weeks. If I was past 36 weeks thay just wouldn't let me go.

With this particular airline, if I was carrying multiples, 32 weeks would be the cutoff. I would still have to fill out the form etc. So that is definitely something to bear in mind.

I think it totally depends on the doctor and on the risk factors. I was cut off from flying at 32 weeks due to having a low-lying placenta (which has since cleared up), but another friend with the same condition was cut off from flying much earlier by her doctor. As far as I understand there's no major inherent risk in flying. The doctor's don't want to risk having you go into labor in flight or while you're far from home though.

Thanks for responding ladies! I know I wont know the answer until she talks to her doctor, but I like to know things now!

@mediagirl: I agree, it wouldn't be worth it for me to go. Her husband is super paranoid, so I would be surprised if he would let her go anyway.

@artbee: this is your friend who had problems getting pregnant and ended up doing IVF, right? Honestly, if I were her and had put SO MUCH into getting pregnant, I wouldn't risk it whether the doc said I could go or not.

It seems a bit far along for triplets. When I had twins I looked like I was 8 or 9 months pregnant by then. My twins were really high risk as they were developing twin to twin transfer syndrome so I had to have a high res ulta sound every week to check them. I think she will have to clear it with her doctor but guess is she probably will not want to go by then

at 5 months she is probably ok depending on the distance. I was elevated risk and flew at 5 months, but I only had one baby. So Im not really sure. I doubt her doctor will want her to be across the country, but if she is near medical care he might be easier on her.

I'm not sure there are really "rules" for high risk pregnancies. It's all up to the patient and OB. Honestly, I've been traveling a bunch and my last trip - with one baby in there at 6 months along - was miserable. If it were me, pregnant with three? I probably wouldn't feel comfortable flying long distance away from my safety zone with three babies in there!!

My friend who's having triplets has a trip planned for when shell be 5 months along. Obviously she'll talk to her doctor, but I'm wondering the chances that she'll be able to go.
