My first was like that, very content, only fussed if hungry or tired. Never even really cried. I joke now that she cries more now at 5 yo than she ever did as a baby and it's true.

My second was way more fussy and cried way more.

I think what you describe it totally normal and on the awesome side!! enjoy it!

So my kids were born 41+2, 38+2 and 36+4 and as they get more premature they got more sleepy. Both DD1 and the twins were basically only up to eat for a really long time. And as others have said because of the NICU time my twins were very independent sleepers from the get go. My second also learned really quickly (maybe because she had to since I was solo for much of the week?) but it was definetly the most work to get my first to sleep and he loved to sleep on me during the day for a long time.

So I vote: Totally normal behavior. Sometimes I felt as though I wasn't cuddling them enough but I think through BF they got their cuddling time then.

My third was like this! Like are and slept. That’s it. So weird. My first was a happy guy but awake alll the time. My second was more like the third but cried quite a bit in there too.

I was assured by my friends it was quite a normal baby thing to sleep all day! Haha

All three of mine have been distinctly different. So far, each one has had their moments. My middle was by far the easiest baby though...very much like what you are describing. Even into toddlerhood he napped a ton and enjoyed it, and it totally freaked me out! My first on the other hand was not quite as not-sleepy as your first, but cried for hours and hours too.

I think right now you should just enjoy it and try not to worry unless told otherwise by your doctor. I'm sure he's already been evaluated and at the moment, whether it's something or it's nothing, the best thing for all of you is to just be enjoying this time and bonding and all of that.

You baby sounds like LO2 (born at 37+2). For the first 3 months she was very sleepy and never cried unless she was hungry or pooped. I was worried because LO1 was WIDE AWAKE from birth and was fussy and let us know he needed attention all the time.

@lilyofthewest: I don’t want to make assumptions about what is “normal” but my son (now 3) didn’t cry as a baby unless he was hungry or sick (ear infection). Maybe you’re getting a bit luckier this time with an easier temperament? I wouldn’t necessarily chalk it up to prematurity or potential neuro issues.

This is totally normal - enjoy it! My first was also colicky literally from the first night. My second was the quintessential "sleep like a baby" newborn. Those early days were honestly such a dream because he was so easy and snuggly! Interestingly, he was not a preemie, but spent 8 days in the NICU. There might be something to do being born right into an environment where they have to sleep through bright lights and loud noises!

My 2nd was born at 36 weeks (so not even close to your 32 weeks, but still considered preterm) and he was exactly as you’re describing. Very sleepy, mostly content. Woke to eat and went almost right back to sleep. He couldn’t spend more than a half hour to 40 mins awake (including changing and feeding).

I was told by my pediatrician that it’s very normal and it’s more common in early babies because they should still be cooking.

I would enjoy it and use it to lay the foundation for some great habits - sleeping in crib (or other flat surface) and not rocking to sleep/holding. Unless that’s your thing! Then by all means. But I found it was very easy to get him used to indpendent sleeping because he was already so sleepy and I could put him in his crib and walk away.

Congrats!!!

@lilyofthewest: i have 3 kiddos and yes they do have different temperaments. Also they go through phases so they might be super sleepy this week and then more alert the next. But yeah sleeping most of the day is typical newborn behavior

My full term baby was exactly like you described. He slept, pooped and basically grunted/squeaked to indicate hunger. I’m not exaggerating when I say he slept probably 20 hours/day. He didn’t cry much. He definitely went through a colicky phase around 2-3 months, but he was a blissful newborn. Congrats on your bundle!

@Foodnerd81: This was my experience too. My first cried a lot and didn’t sleep well. Our second was the opposite literally from birth. She’s a little more resistant to sleep now that she’s a toddler though. 😆

This sounds very "typical" in my experience. My second DS is 4 months old and this sounds very much like his first couple of weeks. He was definitely more vocal/fussy when he was gassy or had some reflux but only cried when hungry and slept most of the day.

My first DS was not a sleepy newborn and was alert most of the day but did not have any issues with gas or reflux so was less fussy.

Sounds normal, I think. My third is like this and after raising two wired babies who hated sleep, I was kind of in shock for the first few weeks. I mean... a kid who voluntarily naps several times a day? And who can't stay awake for very long and would rather go back to sleep? Something must be wrong. But then I remembered all these stories from friends about kids with naps and 7 PM bedtimes and realized she's just a "typical" baby

Congrats on being home! My non preemie baby had reflux so did cry/fuss some while eating but not for the first couple of weeks. Also cried in carseat. Otherwise she barely cried and slept constantly in our arms and 4 hours at night by a few weeks. Was alert while awake but not awake much! She’s now a very alert, happy, great-sleeping 11 month old.

My older one was pretty high strung from the get go- when people said things like “babies just sleep anywhere” I thought they were crazy. My younger one was so much more easy going, and yes she did sleep anywhere for a while. Their personalities were so different. Both were exactly full term (one born 1 day before due date and one on her due date).

DS1 was born at 35 weeks, no NICU stay but he was definitely what you describe for your preemie. He took way longer to ‘wake up’ so to say in his temperament than DS2 who was born at 40+4 and only had like a week of newborn sleepies and then cried and was fussy and high maintenance. So yes, I vote normal and also normal for siblings to be so wildly different!

I don't know what "normal is" but both of my kids were the "eating, sleeping, pooping, followed by more sleeping" kind of babies. They were both grunty and gassy from weeks 4-8 (and also seemed like they had a harder time settling around then; the "witching hours" were in full force).
But neither had colic. Our neighbors kid had that; that poor baby screamed 8+ hours a a day. Those poor parents.
Enjoy your sleepy hungry little babe! Those all sound like good things to me :) congrats!

My 32-week preemie came home from a 7-week NICU stay on Thursday. He'll be 40-weeks corrected tomorrow. In addition to coming early, he's got some neuro and genetic anomalies of unknown clinical significance (aka, could mean anything or nothing). So far, he's very, very different from my first kid.

My newbie basically eats and sleeps. He's awake, alert, and interactive for a few brief periods each day (...and night). He makes a lot of fussy, grunty noises about gas/pooping, but only actually cries if he's hungry, cold, or really f$cking done with tummy time.

Is this what "normal" babies are like?

My first was a refluxy, colicky mess. He was usually screaming if he wasn't nursing. He cried upwards of 5 hours a day for his first 4+ months. And he didn't sleep so well -- usually only 6-8 hours per 24 and mostly in stretches of 40 minutes or less.

Do siblings come with such different temperaments? Or is this about being a preemie even though he's term now? Or does this portend that his genetic and neuro stuff is negatively impacting him?
