My husband has been disappointed by the attitudes of people towards fathers versus mothers at his work. he'd probably interpret how the woman described her husband's experience as negative since that attitude diminishes the father's role in raising his kids. Work life balance I think is an appropriate conversation for people to have with both men and women, fathers should not be excluded from the conversation. I I think the answer is including men in that conversation and not excluding that conversation from the work environment

@Adira: Totally agree! My little guy knows that it's time for mommy to work just like it's time for daddy to work. He knows that we both love him and want the best for him and sees us as equals in that space...exactly how DH and I see ourselves. It's something we want to instill in him and this next boy...that your partner is your equal. You sacrifice for each other and your family. If staying at home is what works for him and his wife (or partner), then do it, but remember that she (or he) is your equal no matter what their role is.

I don't have a daughter, but I am daughter....and my mom was a SAHM while I was growing up. She and I have had very different life experiences, I never once thought about my mom staying at home and me being advantaged or disadvantaged by it.

@LovelyPlum: thanks! just in DC/College Park, which is where we lived before grad school so it's fun to be back and see old friends here. plus, dh's family is here so his mom is taking care of R during the day--free child care FTW! total tangent, but omg, do you have to do research at the US National archives at all? I want to pull my hair out right now, I miss Kew sooo much in comparison...

I needed to read this today! I usually work part-time, which I love though it isn't really enough time to get what needs to get done accomplished, but I'm working full-time this week while on a research trip and the long days are killing me, I miss my baby :( So, so much yes to this!

@Truth Bombs: Ha! I was just about to link to an article about that study.

@Adira: Here it is if you're interested. It discusses the findings re: sons towards the bottom. http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/jun/24/having-a-working-mother-works-for-daughters

@Adira: @ms.line: @rachiecakes: right on! A friend actually recently sent me a study showing that men who had working mothers grow up to be more equal spouses in taking care of the house and kids.

<3

I think this is an important thing for boys to learn too. I want my boys to know that a working mom is a totally valid option that's just as awesome as a stay at home mom! I've met a few guys who have been of the mindset "My mom stayed home to raise me, so my wife should do the same for our kids." I'm proud to be working and giving my boys the view of a strong working mama! Plus they get to see their dad staying home with them when they are sick so their mom can work and chipping in equally when it comes to household AND childcare chores! Hopefully they'll be just as likely to chip in to help their future significant others with their professional aspirations as well.

I  Scary Mommy!

My LO is almost 4. She knows that she goes to school so Mommy can go to work. And that Mommy works to have money so we can have a house, car, food, clothes and toys. The toys are her addition to my listing of "necessities". Now when she wants something, she'll ask me if I have money from working today. :)

Oh, and she wants to be a firefighter, police and princess. Good luck girl :)
