I have an intolerance for mushrooms, mangoes, and shellfish - but only if I have too much (which is about half a bite of mushroom, 4 shrimp, or 2/3s of a mango lassi.)

I'm actually allergic to irises, my favorite flower - they make my face swell like crazy.

I don't have any food allergies, I have an intolerance to peppers. But I have an anaphylaxis in response to Morphine, at work I have to wear gloves at a minimum to handle it, and ensure that any areas where morphine has been used is cleaned thoroughly.

I'm allergic to chamomile, which makes my throat and tongue itch and swell if I drink it, and gives me wicked hives if I handle it. I'm also allergic to the iodine in table salt (sea salt is fine).

I have a brutal dairy intolerance (not allergy) as well, but because the symptoms aren't life-threatening, I indulge in icecream and Brie cheese occasionally.

@Rubies: For all the allergies I have, I actually don't have many issues eating out, mainly because other than avocado and watermelon, the reactions for everything else is minor - just some itchiness. Plus, fruits are easy to avoid.

My LO's allergies, on the other hand, are more severe and the foods she's allergic to are more difficult to avoid, and since I'm still nursing, I eat what she can eat. For example, there really isn't much on a breakfast menu that doesn't have eggs and when there is, it usually has tofu, both of which she is allergic to. So, needless to say, we don't eat out a lot. When we do, it's usually at a steakhouse and I still have to make sure that the steak isn't grilled in butter or that the mashed potatoes doesn't contain dairy. It's not impossible but it definitely requires effort. To be honest, I'm still getting used to all the food limitations, especially when there's soy, dairy, and wheat in almost everything.

@pastemoo: anaphylaxis is a fairly general term that covers a range of symptoms but usually if there is swelling it is considered one. The difference in reactions that people have is due to the differences in tolerance levels.

The problem with this though is that allergies are not static, they change. Even though a reaction usually takes a particular path you can't guarantee that the next time it might not be more severe and life threatning.
At least that's how the allergy specialist explained it to me. I carry an epi-pen just in case

I'm allergic to lots of stuff: Avocados, tropical fruits (mangoes, pinepples, kiwi, etc), crab, watermelon, any melons, pollen, and some others that I can't recall. Luckily, the only life-threatening one is avocados.

Unfortunately, I've passed this horrible trait to my LO and she's allergic to 7 of the 8 most common foods: Peanuts, tree nuts, soy, dairy, wheat, egg, fish (tilapia), plus black pepper, sesame seeds, garlic. And if that's not bad enough, she's citric acid intolerant which means no fruits except for bananas. I hope she outgrows at least some of these.

@cupcakemama: Not entirely true, but mostly true. My wheat allergy was a true allergy (hives and swelling) without anaphylaxis. I never had severe throat swelling or carried an epi-pen, but you bet that I avoided wheat like the plague because the hives were uncomfortable (and got worse if I exercised within a day of accidentally eating the wheat) and ugly.

Many people have food intolerances, and those are different from food allergies, but not all food allergies are severe food allergies.

A food allergy is usually defined as having an anaphylactic reaction - full body hives/skin reaction, swelling of the lips/tongue/throat and then GI tract issues as the food works it's way through your system. It is potentially life threatening which is why people with a medically diagnosed allergy tend to carry an epipen with them.
Other reactions are food intolerances and while unpleasant, won't actually kill you.
I have an allergy to MSG. It's a pain because it is in soooo many snack foods. Basically anything in a packet that is cheesy flavored probably has MSG in it.

Environmental allergies--I've got them all. But I'm also allergic to soy. It was awful as a child (GI tract stuff), then went away after puberty, but came back a few years ago when I was doing a soy- and whey-based diet (Medifast). Seems to only be the processed stuff that I get a reaction to, though. I can eat edamame or soy sauce or miso and be fine, but chocolate with soy lecithin or baked goods with soybean oil make my face flush like crazy and give me tingly lips. I also can't use soy-based lotions--they make me break out. I hope my kid doesn't have this allergy--it seems to be in everything these days.
