Summer camp. Same camp all summer but each week has a different theme and they get to go on field trips, have splash days, etc. Both of my parents worked full-time growing up and I have some very fond memories of summer camp.

A lot of my friends use the summer camp option. A few use a summer nanny bc there are usually a lot of college kids home for the summer who would like a job.

C's school offers summer camp with different themes each week (top chef, dinosaurs, space, etc). I put her in a few last summer bc I was pregnant and not feeling great at all. And I'll put her in a few next summer bc I don't want her stuck at home while her baby brother naps the day away.

A few people I know with older kiddos also send kids to stay with a set of grandparents for a week or two.

I think your idea of splitting it up is good. My kids didn't like being outside when it was super hot so I pulled them out, but I don't work so we had that option. If you split, I would do the outside one in the beginning of summer and then inside after (assuming it'll be hotter further into summer).

We're not there yet but I assume we will do a mix of camp and grandma/grandpa-care. My MIL just retired this year and my dad hopes to retire in 2-3 years (LO won't start K for 3 years).

Our daycare offers a summer camp that goes up to 8 yrs old... and we may still have younger siblings in daycare at that point. other wise we'll take a week vacation, i'm hoping maybe my mom will take a week and my inlaws may offer to take her to the shore for a week. I havent looked into it yet but i'm pretty sure her elementry school may offer a summer camp 9-12am with an aftercare program for 5 weeks. I used to work at one similar in HS in a neighboring district.

one camp for the whole summer* - they have theme weeks and swim 2 times a day (lessons in the AM and free swim in the PM) - They are outside all day unless the heat index gets crazy - optional field trips once per week - DS had a blast!

*I did end up letting him go to 1 week of Minecraft camp but it was crazy $$$$ so that was it!

Not sure yet, but I know our daycare offers a summer program for school aged kids. That's probably what we will do, which will also make it easy to keep my two together since the younger one will already be there.

@mediagirl: For now, we keep him at the same place. The summer session is only 8 weeks, so if we didn't have the help that we do, we would need to send him to some other places to fill in the gaps. At his current place, they do a theme per week, that involves crafts, small projects, being outdoors with the trails and animals, etc.

I think as with anything, kids get bored. I am not sure what we'll do next year (I want to mix it up, but my son likes routine) and I have to remember it's not me going to camp, but him, lol.

@looch: do you keep him in the same one all summer? My daughter enjoys art but also enjoys being outside. I wonder if breaking it up where she goes for half the summer at the outdoor camp and half at the museum would be good or too stressful?

We're not there yet but I thought about getting a summer nanny. I know there are college kids that are looking for work. I did this one summer myself.

Camp at a Nature Center! My son's been going since he was three as we used a preschool that didn't have full day care. During the summer, they offer weekly sessions, so you can buy as many or as little as you want. It's great for us because we typically take a two week block of time off.

There are a ton of options, including camps run by the school district, the YMCA, the tumble place, even the "arcade" has camps for older kids.

This is for elementary parents or upcoming elementary parents:

If you both work and you don't take summers off, have you started planning or thinking about camps for your kids for summers after school is out?

I saw some pretty cool ones last night when I was researching our local options. One is through our local kids museum and the other is through a park here where their money-back guarantee is your kid will come home dirty, tired and happy.

They're expensive, for sure. The most expensive I have found. But they're also age-specific. They don't put 6 year olds with 12 year olds (like a lot of the parks and rec and YMCA ones do).
