It got silly to get him things because they always sat on the shelf. Like one year he asked for an echo dot, and it is somewhere never opened, years later! Many many things like that including several semi-pricey tech things, but I felt bad returning them myself. He can appreciate sentimental stuff in the moment but again, never a second thought, even the projects I spent tons of time on for our 10th anniversary. </p> <p>So basically these days I go for food or funny stuff. This year it’s two things from Shutterfly, a “daddy” wine glass (because he will use that ... ) and socks with the kids’ faces on them. And then I was inspired by the World Market make your own advent calendar, but didn’t want to buy their fancy box, so we found 12 food things there to get and wrapped in 12 boxes. It’s little stuff like one is mustard he likes, some chocolate, etc. Fun for all and doesn’t have to sit on a shelf!</p> <p>@pachamama: I haven’t worked in 5 years but I never look at it as his money. Because how much would it cost to pay someone to do what I do at home?? One year it was a king-sized bed, sometimes a vacation, this year some new sheets and towels. We also aren't afraid to spend money on things we want/need throughout the year, and we both prefer it this way. We do small gifts, so this year I got him an Enso ring (his wedding ring got too big for him and can't get resized--some day I'll get him another, but this seemed like a good smaller gift) and a book light (now I'm feeling lame...)
