I am kind of obsessed and also recently read "Big Brother". I agree with @sarac that she's pretty harsh about people who are overweight/obese. I loved We Need to Talk About Kevin, and Big Brother. So then I went to read The Female of the Species, and yeah, it's weird and not nearly as good. My edition of the book had an essay from the author about how it was her first book, and that she's glad to have evolved in her writing ability since then. She was pretty clearly saying 'this book is good, but it gets way better', which seems to be the case. I'm eager to go read all of her stuff to see the entire arc of her talent.</p> <p>As an aside, I see the criticism of Big Brother. It was based on her real life experience with an obese brother who died, so I tried to excuse her feelings. But there is some really ugly sentiment about overweight people. I started with 'We Need to Talk About Kevin', which is utterly gripping. Then I read her latest book, 'Big Brother', which was just as compelling without the violence and really tragic ending. I'm going back and reading some of her earlier stuff now, which is interesting. I really like everything I've read so far. </p>
