A stroller - we have a Cosco Adirondack (with a car seat until baby is old enough to sit) and ours has stood up to 2.5 years of heavy use very well
A&A blankets
Diapers
A crib
A pump (Medela Pump in Style Advanced, extra bonus that the backpack it comes in doubled as my work bag very nicely)

And just for my youngest... a carrier (Freehand mei tai). The kid hates the stroller, the crib, and anything other than being carried by me. DS was a much calmer kid, but with DD a carrier is a must.

If you're planning to bedshare (or just find yourself doing so for sanity's sake) swaddles and sleep sacks aren't so great as when baby is sleeping alone.

For bedsharing, I found that sleepers with feet were essential. They can kick hard for their size and those toenails are sharp no matter how much you try to file them. My favorite ones have ended up being some from Old Navy. They snap up the crotch on both sides (much easier for changes than the ones that just zip down one leg) and they have fold over mitts on the arms to stop scratching.

Hmmm. I had to really think about this one! Here's what I used a lot of for the early days:

1. Bjorn bouncer (or any lightweight bouncer)--something that is easy to tote around and place your baby in for hanging out or naps.

2. Summer Infant Snuzzler Support -- I put this in her bouncer and her big girl stroller. It was so cozy and kept her snug.

3. Kimono shirts -- she lived in these for the newborn phase. No pants. One less thing to hassle with when you're changing the diapers all the time and I liked not having to pull something over her floppy head.

4. Swaddle Designs flannel blankets -- huge blankets that have a little more stick to them and are forgiving in the swaddling department. Good for my winter baby.

5. Cheater swaddles, like the Halo sleepsack.

6. (cheater, I know) Some baby carrier -- it really comes down to preference for both you and baby, but it was crucial for the witching hour and getting around. The Moby was hot and would pick up dog fur from our floor, so I would look to a different wrap for next time.

Other things I like, now that I'm on a roll--
Avent Soothies--saved my nipples. May try MAM next time b/c I read they're lighter and easier to keep in.
Cloth diapers for burp cloths--buy at least 12 and stash around your house for!
Medela nipple cream (spreads easily)
Grovia diaper stick (nice not to mess up your hands and love the smell)
Aquaphor in the big tub for both the bum and face.
Rock n' Play--I resisted it for awhile b/c I read so many stories of people transitioning their babies from it to the crib and it sounded horrible, but resistance was futile--she loved it and it was easy to move around and get right next to my bed.

And I recommend getting a journal of some kind to jot down a line a day. You will forget things and I love looking back to remember that first smile, laugh, and more. Lots of blank pages and I wish I had been more dedicated early on.

4. Video Monitor (though I wouldn't recommend mine)
5. Fisher Price Rainforest Jumparoo - LO has loved it from 5months, still does now at almost 10!

Honorable mention: Britax travel system and Halo Sleep Sacks (both the swaddle and non-swaddle kinds!)

1- Motorola video monitor
2- my breast friend nursing pillow
3- lulujo muslin blankets (I prefer over a&a and they are cheaper.. Bonus if they are bamboo  )
4- bouncer seat/swing... Don't necessarily need both
5- pack and play for our room since we have babies sleep with us until 4-6 months and then it's amazing for containing them when they are mobile and you need to pee!

3 - Rumina nurse/pump bras and tanks (means I save a lot of time not completely stripping off at work)
4 - Leachco podster
5 - Newborn napper that came with our Pack-n-Play (it is really just the Graco branded version of the rock n play)

Honorable mentions for
- A white noise machine (though mty phone works ok and if I could figure out what I'd done with my old ipod touch that would be better than either).
- Swing
- Really large fold-up change mat
Reusable nursing pads
Motorola video monitor
Activity mat
Blackout blinds + blackout window film (yep, we need both)
White noise machine
Nursing tank tops and a comfortable nursing bra to sleep in (you have to have something to hold the nursing pad in place on the opposite boob when you nurse at night, otherwise the mattress gets soaked - I hadn't thought about this ahead of time, and needing to wear a bra at night was pretty new for me)

Broke the rules, that's way more than five. But I'd call them all totally essential to our baby-rearing experience thus far (4 months).

1.) Marpac Dohm - both girls have one and we still use it in the 2.5 year old's room every nap/night
2.) Video Monitor - how do people live without a visual of their kid?
3.) Medela Freestyle to pump on the go
4.) Boppy (this should have been #1!)
5.) A stroller with the car seat adapters for infants. We have the UBV but I never had DH put the adapters on for DD1, I would transfer her from her carseat and just use the stroller seat. For DD2, he put them on and it is like night and day! I am a moron for not doing that with LO1!

Play gym

Love to Dream swaddles

Burp cloths (I made mine out of old sheets and carry them everywhere!)

Once our big girl started crawling, then our play pen was also a well used piece of gear, it gave me a safe space to put baby when I needed to step away from her for a moment.

1. Graco glider swing
2. Halo sleepsacks (I had 3 NB size, 2 small size)
3. Pacifiers
4. Breastpump (I got mine free through my insurance company!) - I have the Medela In Style Advanced. I also upgraded (for $90) for it to come in a tote bag with a mini cooler inside.
5. Beco Gemini baby carrier. We don't use a stroller so we use this several times a day! I love the Gemini because you can use it 7lbs-35lbs without an infant insert.

Other items I love:
- Pack 'n Play - Totally didn't think I'd use this but my LO sleeps in this every night next to my bed!
- At least 4-5 Pack 'n Play sheets. He spit up constantly for 2 months so having lots of sheets helped.
- Prefold cloth diapers as burp cloths, all other things kind of suck as burp rags.
- One of those standard blue baby bathtubs.
- A&A swaddle blankets-- they're great for just putting on him when he naps in his swing (supervised, of course)
- A sun hat if you use a carrier
- Nipple cream. This was my savior for the first month.
- Reusable nipple pads - Dr. Brown's are my favorite because they aren't super thick.
- Hands-free pumping bra
- Medela manual pump - it's small and fits in my purse when I'm out with friends/DH and the little guy is at the grandparents' for the day.

@pachamama:

In the early days
Bobby Newborn lounger (not the nursing pillow)
Rock n play
A&A muslin blankets (not bamboo too slippery)
We had nursing issues (obviously not planning on that) so having my pump and bottles bought, cleaned and ready to go was so important.
My breast friend nursing pillow.

Now that she's 5 months
A great stroller- We have the city mini GT
The Ergo, I used the k'tan a lot in the beginning but now that she's 15 lbs not so much
A good diaper bag- I have a skip hop one- I was just using a Baggu Duck bag which was great until I figured out what I needed from a bag. I'm happy I waited.

Also: Gillian O'Malley Nursing tanks, I have like 10 now.

For newborn days:
-Pack n play with bassinet and changing table attachments (kept in our room and she slept in that for almost 6 months-- also why a baby monitor is not on this list, although it would be for 6+ mo).
-Halo Swaddlsacks
-Changing pads (these ones-- I kept one rolled up in a caddy with diapers and carried it around the house with us the first few months so I could change her diaper anywhere and not worry about her peeing everywhere- http://www.amazon.com/Munchkin-Count-Waterproof-Changing-Liners/dp/B009UPUJIY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1438998276&sr=8-2&keywords=changing+pads)
- moby wrap (that is what I used for newborn days, although now I use a ring sling and I think if I had another kid I might just use that). Its the only way to do anything with 2 hands and a fussy newborn.
- netflix. Watched soo many series the first 2 mo while nursing around the clock!
