I'm scared of cheerios, they seem like they'd be easy to gag on but it sounds like that might be a silly fear.

She does eat pieces of avocado and banana, maybe I'll just expect a mess and let her try to self feed what she's already used to. I tried a gerber graduate puff and she doesn't seem to like them, just makes a face and then hits it on the table.

His favorites are cheese, toast, graham crackers, pear/apple slices, bananas, pasta, scrambled eggs...he'll tolerate green peppers, peas, cooked carrots, and a couple bites of chicken (he's 9 months)

charlie was a picky little boy and pretty much didn't eat anything other than puffs, cheerios, and crackers/yogurt melts.

you can try tofu cubes covered in cheerio dust!

@pelikila: excellent thank you! I think I'll just grate the apples, and maybe sneak in a few carrots, let's see how that goes. I might also bake them in my madeline pan. That's a good "finger food" size.

@Mrsbells: Agreed, pancakes (or waffles) are another good one. Again, I put blueberries to give some fruit with the carbs. I'll put the slightest bit of butter on them but no syrup since it is too much like honey and that isn't good for babies.

@looch: I use Smitten Kitchen's recipes for both Blueberry and the Whole Wheat Apple muffins. Just make sure to cut the apples up a bit smaller than you would make for yourself.

Muffins! I hadn't thought about baking any muffins!

Can you share your whole wheat apple one?

I also give my son small pieces of bread with laughing cow cheese. He loves it.

I'm assuming you mean finger foods that are table foods beyond the standard cheerios and puffs. We've been giving my son muffins and breads cut up into small pieces and he loves feeding himself. He's been having those for breakfast since about 9.5 months or so (6 teeth at the time)? I make them all so I know exactly what is in them and use a blueberry muffin recipe, a zucchini muffin recipe, a whole wheat apple muffin recipe, a banana bread recipe (leave out the nuts), and a pumpkin bread recipe. Also he loves buttered toast cut up into tiny pieces. I've given him the pastas for soups since they are teeny tiny but my son thinks all pasta is poison and refuses to even touch it.

If you choose to do cut up veggies, make sure you steam them well if they are a harder veggie like carrots.

My son had no teeth at 8 months old, we used the mesh feeder for fruit at that time because it was summer and he loved to chomp on grapes and melon.

I never used commercial snacks like puffs, yogurt melts, mum mums etc. because they're not locally available and it turns out he doesn't like them anyway. Now, he gets Cheerios and bits of whatever we're eating as finger foods. He's 13 months now and still only rocking 5 teeth!

I don't let my LO eat finger foods just yet (10 months old on the 27th and has 6 teeth). She'll take bites of banana though. I tried giving her chunky rice porridge and sweet potato, but it gets everywhere and very little ends up in her mouth.
I did try organic puffs shortly after she turned 8 months old and she choked so I haven't tried those since.

I'd say any mushy fruit/veggie cut into small pieces or mashed up should be fine.

My LO is approaching 8 months and we've mainly been doing purees but I want to start letting her have the opportunity to try to feed herself. What did your baby like to gnaw on that wasn't much of a choking hazard. She still has zero teeth and no signs of them coming anytime soon.
