@catlady: everything you said. this happened to me after my new year's resolution for January 2014--I was waking up at 5am for spin 5 days a week, wasn't sleeping enough but trying SO hard, and by March I had gained a couple of pounds. it was so frustrating, and on top of the exercise I think just being awake more of the time made me eat more. then I went back to normal exercise, slept in, and cut all the carbs out--lost so much weight and felt amazingly balanced and healthy the whole time. it's literally the only thing that has ever worked for me.

I dropped about 10lbs in 2 months and what i've been focusing on is replacing breakfast and lunch with protein shake mixed with coconut milk (EAS in the health aisle in target), 0% Fage with berries for a snack, and tea instead of coffee Mon-Fri. Dinners I try to make lower carb things, Grilled meats, veggies, salad, maybe a rice or pasta side. I walk 2 miles at lunch time around the business park. On weekends I'm a little looser and and just try to stay under 1500 calories. I track using fitbit and my fitness pal.

If your goal is strictly weight loss, I would actually recommend not exercising at all but just focusing on very healthy low-carb food. I just started a diet/exercise plan (6 workouts per week) and I actually gained weight after a month because my body wasn't used to exercising so I was hungry all the time. I like the exercise so I am going to stick with it but if you don't care how you get there, I'd skip it. It's way easier to watch calories if you don't put extra stress on your body.

Also, make sure you get enough sleep. When I am sleep deprived, I always overeat.

Cutting carbs/sugar. When I had GD that helped me not gain weight! It's just been hard to get back on that horse! My friend did the same thing and she lost so much weight withot exercise!

Eating well is my best advice.

I worked out for a year at the gym but didn't change my diet and I actually gained a few lbs (and no it wasn't muscle).

In January I decided to do a 60 day workout program - work out 6 days a week and follow a food plan - I used the 21 day fix containers which SUCKED at first but after a month I no longer used them because I could eye what a serving size was.

After 30 days I lost 4.5lbs
After 60 days I lost 6.5lbs

I lost:
2 inches in my hips
1 in my chest
1 in right leg
1 in left leg
1/2 right arm
1 in left arm
2 in waist

I do have cheat meals here and there but I swear its the eating clean 90% of the time that made the difference for me!

Typical food day for me:

Breakfast- 2 hard boiled eggs, 2 clementines, 1 piece of bread with PB

Lunch - turkey chili over lettuce, topped with a little bit of cheese and plain greek yogurt (in lieu of sour cream)

dinner - broiled tilapia, sweet potato, brown rice, broccoli

snacks - popcorn, fruit, protein shake

I'm 16 pounds down so far (and counting) through straight calorie counting. I eat anything and everything (dessert 5 nights a week) but within my daily calorie limit (I use loseit and eat 16-1800 a day). I find I gravitate toward healthy choices because they keep me full longer. I also exercise 2-4 days a week but eat those calories back.

this might sound extreme (foreshadowing) but when I cut out *all* carbs--no whole grains, no potatoes, no brown rice, nothing--and ate a veggie, fat, and protein-heavy diet, the weight melted off, and stayed off. I've always been an avid exerciser and still believe in exercise, but it has not that much of an effect on my weight. the fat component is essential to not getting hungry, rounding out the meal and giving your body nutrition. So I'd eat lots of greens with olive oil, dark meat chicken with skin on, full-fat yogurt with walnuts, cheese, roasted mixed veggies with pesto. The reason why I don't eat this way all the time is that it's a total pain in the ass to sustain because you basically can't travel and it's very hard to eat out. But to lose 15 pounds in a month while I'm in regular life, this works.

@yoursilverlining: same! Lots of protein. Eggs, lean means, plain yogurt helped me stay full and I didn't crave carbs as often.

For example, I would do...
Yogurt for breakfast
2 hard boiled eggs for a snack
A can of tuna on a big leafy salad for lunch
And 2 lean burgers or turkey burgers for dinner

And of course my greens (5 cups), fruit (3 cups), carbs (1.5 cups), fats (1/4 cup) and nut butters (5 tsp) and 2 tbsp of dressing. Every body is different but that's what mine needed to lose weight. It seemed like a lot of food but I was never hungry.

Weights made all the difference for me. I joined a weightlifting class and started going to a pump & sculpt class, and that's when I went from losing weight to really redefining my body. Cutting dairy out of my diet also worked great.

21 days fix to start. But the tiny food containers they provide and 1200 calorie diet killed me. (I think 21 days fix want you to do a 750 calorie deficit per day for dramatic result in a short period of time)

In short, I got a fitbit and stick to a 500 calorie deficit a day. To achieve that, I work out following the 21 day fix dvds 30 minutes every morning, and watch what I eat accordingly. I have no problem counting calories, and I snack on low calorie snacks.

I agree with everyone that 80% of weightloss is really what you eat. You practically don't need to exercise if you don't care much about eating :-) I have to exercise because I work from home and I don't get to walk that much, and if I don't work out and burn some calories I will basically gain weight just by drinking water and breathing lol. And I love eating too much I am willing to burn some calories in order to fit a snack in!

The protein shake every morning (replacing the morning breakfast) really kicked started it too. I also try to only eat salad (no dressing) and a protein (usually smoked salmon) for lunch.

Things I cut out: cream, milk, sugar in coffee or tea, starbucks coffee drinks, morning pop tarts, salad dressing, any kind of soda /juices/sweet drinks (replace with 0 calorie sparkling water if needed), wine. I also try to cut as much carbs as possible. Theoretically if you cut gluten it will also help but I didn't go that far.

Things that I used to love which I do not touch anymore: Mcdonalds sausage egg mcmuffin. Did you know those things are 750+ calories each? Yikes!! With a hash brown and coffee with cream and sugar that's easily 1200 calories in just one morning haha.

Last but not least - it is the discipline and your mindset that will win you the race :) I often slip on weekends because we eat out all the time on the weekends. Life is too short and there are just so many yummy food!

Good luck!!

@matador84: Yea, I totally admit it would have been way harder if I had done it for myself and not my daughter. I didn't cut out all carbs though, I still had rice, corn, potatoes, etc. Just no gluten! Beer was really the hardest part. Of course everyone is different and reacts differently so who knows if it'd even help!
As far as exercising, this is perhaps a lazy person speaking but I really think that losing weight is at least 80% what you eat.

It depends on what your diet looks like. I thought I ate pretty healthy, then I did the Whole 30 and lost 9 lbs in a month (I went from a couple lbs over the healthy BMI for my height to a very healthy weight for me). I didn't exercise at all. But, I was eating a ton of fairy and processed things and when I cut out all sugar, diary, wheat, etc, the lbs just fell off and I was sleeping SO well.

After that I really cleaned up my diet and the next time I did the Whole 30, I didn't lose nearly as much.

Cut out gluten and dairy. I was never ever into the idea of going gluten free but I did so for 8 months as part of an elimination diet (daughter's food sensitivities while breastfeeding) and the baby weight dropped right off. I'm still dairy free but have added gluten back in and I can already tell I'm gaining a bit of the weight back!

@matador84: how long is the contest for?
I lost over 20 pounds in a year by cutting out the coke I had every day.
I think if you don't exercise than adding that will help but if you do already exercise, look to something(s) you can eliminate from your diet.
