We don't have kids, or in sure it would be daycare. FOOD is definitely the biggest budget buster for us. I especially hate when we buy healthy and then eat out and it goes to waste.

Our transportation cost is really high. No car payments but we have monster commutes up and down a tollway each day. Leads to more gas, more tolls, and more maintenance.

@StbHisMrs: I have not but I'll check it out. We get a 1/4 beef as needed so it's rarely meat. More just random good deals last time it was air filters and a feather pillow. Oh Costco.

So I need to get back to YNAB for September so I was playing with some numbers.

60% of our take home income is spent on Mortgage (22%), Daycare (20%), Car Payments (8%) and utilities bills (10%).

So although food does seem like a lot of money, its really only about 10% of our take home.

Definitely eating out. It's so dang convenient and "inexpensive" ($10-$20 for all 3 of us) until you eat out 3-4x a week here and there, then get your credit card bill and you're all like

Daycare, Student Loans, Cars, Food and Country Club.

Daycare is what it is, our center is expensive but I like it so - so be it!

Student Loans...DH is paying his off over 10 years - so again it is what it is. We'll be done in 5 years - THANK GOD!

Cars - We get employee pricing at 2 of the 3 big three auto makers so we are able to get good deals. Kind of another necessary evil. Sure I could prob cut $100 off each payment (both around $325 for Jeep and 300S) but I dont think its worth it for the quality of car I would be sacrficing.

Food - I try and try. I am thinking of moving to a local farm for meats, buying in bulk and getting a deep freezer chest. I know it would be economical - DH is just struggling with the whole quarter of a cow idea.

Country Club - DH is an obsessive golfer, psycho. We cant make the bill smaller so we just try to use it more and more and other things (that may cost money) less and less. This year we have spent many afternoons at the pool instead of other activities.

Last few months, it's been my student loans because we're trying to knock them out so we're sending every extra cent to them. $6000 until we're debt free! So once that's gone, we'll have so much extra money in the budget.

@Mrs. Peanut: We LOVE Aldi! We've been tracking the difference in our spending, and we save $50 to $100 a week shopping there!

It's a three way tie between insurance premiums, transportation and food.

Food is just expensive, period, where I live. We have access to some home grown vegetables, but not enough where it would make a significant dent in our food budget (and our growing season is short).

@StbHisMrs: I grew up in a family of six kids (although by the time there were six, two were grown, so usually not ever six at one time), and I remember when I found out how much my dad paid for groceries I balked. But thinking back to that number now- I'm shocked he could keep it that low for 8 people!! And there were three growing boys in our family too who ate A LOT. He spent about $800/month, and knowing what I spend just for my family of three, I'm not sure how he did it!
He does do things like buy half a cow each year, and now he has his own chickens (eggs and then he gets enough meat chickens for the year- though he didn't have that when we were kids), and he has a huge garden and does a lot of canning for fall/winter.
