Cook a ton of food, try to eat as much as possible, pass out, wake up late in the night and eat leftovers and watch whatever movies are showing on TV. Pretty much how it goes! There is a traditional dish my mom always made, and now me -- broccoli casserole. Anyway, it's usually just DH and me and my dad and his wife. Though this year it might just be DH and me. Still... will cook way too much food.

We go to my husband's aunt and uncle's for Thanksgiving. I bring three or four dishes with me. Then we all help them decorate their Christmas tree while dinner is cooking. They started doing that so their daughters could be home from college when the tree went up. When it's dinner time we all go around and say what we are thankful for. I love spending Thanksgiving this way.

I am looking forward to establishing Thanksgiving traditions for DH & I and our eventual LOs.

I have always been a "Thanksgiving Orphan," living far away from family. Last year a cousin invited me to his house (2hrs away), before that I was living abroad for a long time so didn't really celebrate. In college, I always went to my aunt's house (1 hr away). Pretty much my entire adult life I've just had Thanksgiving with whoever will take me in.

Next year, hopefully, life will be a little more stable and we can start some traditions of our own!

Growing up, I lived in a cul-de-sac and we always got together with our neighbors, rotating houses every year. It was so fun! None of us had family in the area, and all the kids were similarly aged.

I would love to have a similar tradition for us. I guess it depends on where we wind up living!

Our thanksgiving traditions are...... not very traditional.

-wake up to the song from rocky. We do the turkey trot so that gets us pumped up.
-walk the turkey trot
-go back to my moms for a huge brunch for about 60 people. Always the same people, many we just see once a year. Also always the same food. The day before my sister, mom, and I prepare all the food. My sister and I make the food and trays and my mom cleans up after us.
-bagels, lox, meats and cheases, white fish, ambrosia, fruit compote, noodle pudding, lots of cookies and sweets, chocolate turkeys, etc, etc, etc.

New traditions for me since marrying dh are more traditional. We go to his moms for the traditional turkey dinner.

We spend the majority of the day preparing food then after we eat dinner we bust out the paper and go through all the ads and make a game plan for black Friday :) And now that lo is old enough we have her go through the ads and we cut out the things she likes and put them in an envelope so we can "send it to Santa".

Thanksgiving is always about food. A turkey, potatoes, veggies, rolls and pie. No matter who is there, we go around the table and say what we are thankful for this year. That part was started by my parents and I want it to continue.

Every other year the whole family gets together. We have an off year for those with in-laws to go too. But we all get together at my Aunt's house. They have a big hill in the backyard, so we always find some cardboard and ski down the hill. The kids, and adults have a ball with it. Usually still pretty nice here in Atlanta.

My hubby always raves that he makes a killer turkey, but hasn't yet (we've been together for 6 years now - ha!). So we have a traditional Thanksgiving lunch catered courtesy from a place at my in laws, or if we visit my family, we go out to a restaurant that is serving the Thanksgiving feast. In OK, my family (extended als) would always go to the car dealership after lunch to browse and daydream about the various cars then head to the movie theater followed by an Asian dinner.

It's very important to me that we start establishing special family traditions for every holiday. Some of them we'll adopt from our respective families, and some we'll create especially for our new little family.

What are the special traditions your family has for Thanksgiving? Special breakfasts? Decorations? Games? Foods? Songs or prayers or stories to read?
