EBF for a year, or as long as possible. I BF LO#1 until 8.5 months, when after taking all the special supplements and herbs, drinking my weight in water, living through excruciatingly painful latches and bleeding nipples, buying special double pumps and pumping 8x a day on top of nursing, and struggling through biting, screaming, arching, and refusal to nurse due to an upper lip tie and posterior tongue tie that went undiagnosed until I fought to get her diagnosed and treated properly at 5 months old, all hit me and I went to bed each night sobbing. My supply was so diminished and so difficult to maintain due to LO being unable to properly latch for so long, that when I did stop at 8.5 months, I dried up in 2 days without needing a single feed/ pump to ease any fullness. I'm having the IBCLC who finally caught LO's ULT and PTT come to the hospital to check LO#2's mouth at birth, in hopes of avoiding such complications and difficulty, and having at least a year of nursing.

@Espion: I'm a strong believer in things happening for a reason, and that baby feeding doesn't have to be all or nothing with bfing. We have to do what works for our circumstances and family needs the best.

Looking back, I feel very lucky that while our first two months were a big challenge, it also made me much more relaxed in the long run and made me realize that we could do breastfeeding as a relaxing/bonding activity instead of the ONLY way to feed.

I'm just going to take the wait and see approach. With lo breastfeeding didn't work for us, and even if #2 has an easier time with it I get migraines and have to take meds.... So I don't know if that will work. So I guess my plan is breastfeed until I get a migraine.

I'm not sure if a #2 is in our future but we have had a great formula feeding experience and so I would likely lean in that direction again if circumstances were similar.
I don't have the strong feelings on bf that many ladies do though so it's perhaps an easier decision for me!

We're probably one and done, but if we have another, I will try again to breastfeed, but I will not beat myself up about it it's not working for either one of us.

My mom summed it up best, she had three children...she struggled to BF my brother but no matter what she did, he didn't have the jaw muscle tone to suck, so even though SHE was experienced, HE wasn't and she had to do what was right for him. Given that she had a 2 year old and an 8 year old and a manual pump, he got formula.

We've had a super easy time EBF so I will likely do the same the next time around. However I may have a harder time with pumping since I no longer have a private office, but hopefully that won't keep me from going for a year!

Hoping we have the exact same experience with #2 as we did with our first! LO was EBF (+ solids) until 13 months and never had a drop of formula. I'm not opposed to using formula if necessary, but my personal goal was to try and keep her exclusively on breast milk as long as possible.

Definitely plan to do EBF again but may try to encourage LO #2 to take a bottle of pumped milk every now and then. I SAH so no need to pump but there were times with DD that it would have been nice if she could have taken a bottle. I just never gave her one often enough to get her used to it. It was a sad day when we finally dumped all the frozen milk I had built up in my emergency stash in the freezer!

Same as with #1, mostly breastfeed, a pumped bottle or two a day, and formula supplements if needed. I was so upset about supplementing and having bfing issues in the beginning, but it was seriously a blessing in disguise that he could take both bottle and breast so well.

@grizz: don't stress about the nipple shields. When I used them I stressed so much about weaning her off of it and she would not do it! Then one day when she was four months old she was refusing to nurse so I pulled the shield off, she latched right on and we never used it again. She's now nine months old and still nurses like a champ and has never had a drop of formula. Looking back I think the shields were integral in our breast feeding success and I'm very thankful we had that tool available. I'll certainly try to get the next baby(s) to latch without a shield but if I need to use one again in the future I won't hesitate. Sorry that turned into a novel. Just wanted to give you a little encouragement from the other side of shield usage!

I will do the same as I did this time, I did EBF (though he had some formula in the hospital due to hypoglycaemia and jaundice - which was my choice and I would 10000% do again). Then did BLW. The only change would be that I wouldn't bother pumping as much (I would still maintain a small "just in case" stash though, as S never took to taking EBM by any method.

With T, I breast fed til 6 wks then pumped exclusively until 4.5 months because of low birth weight and reflux. Then formula bc of dairy issues. Next baby will drink from the boob or get formula. Exclusively pumping is such hard work and I can't imagine doing it with a toddler running around. I will also work harder at an elimination diet.

So far feeding for both has been identical.
BM and formula for the first couple weeks of their lives because they both had jaundice. Mostly EBF + pumped milk until 2 months old. Both went on bottle strikes. DS is EBF.
I'm sure I won't go as long with him, but I'll go as long as he wants (28 months is my cut off).
