@Ra: Ba-hahaha! I'm sorry, I shouldn't laugh but I can totally imagine E doing this. She has been known to eat bits of the food she has thrown off the floor once I get her down from the high chair. I actually tried putting her food down in a bowl on the floor (like a dog  ) to see if she would eat it but she didn't.....

We're in the same boat and I can't take it. It's going to drive me insane. DS won't even TOUCH most foods, despite putting them out in front of him for months at a time. He just keeps asking for more milk (we don't give in). It's awful. He won't eat any meat. He doesn't eat pasta or rice. No veggies. He likes very few fruits (unless they're in pouch form, then he eats them). He eats breakfast foods (pancakes, waffles), peanut butter, and applesauce. That's basically it. I don't think he cares if he starves, I really don't. :(

@Boheme: B fights me at breakfast every morning but I've recently discovered that he has been hiding pieces of waffle in the dog toy bin. After a panic filled, knock-down-drag-out-screaming-and-crying-fight with him the other night (because I thought he put a small piece of bone in his mouth) I learned that while he won't eat his waffle at breakfast, 4 day old waffle covered in dog hair (and god knows what else) is quite the delicacy.

@ra: I feel your pain. This is what W eats: cereal, yogurt, cheese, applesauce, crackers (Ritz, Triscuits, graham), English muffins, applesauce, rice, peaches and ... watermelon. His daycare provider claims he eats vegetables, but I've never seen the kid eat any vegetable. I love @scg00387's idea of eating together and giving the toddler one thing you know he/she will eat, but because of work and sleep schedules it's almost impossible for us to eat as a family during the week. Ugh. DH tries to remind me that our moms said we were picky eaters and now we will try anything! BTW, I like your new avatar and name change

He eats a more varied diet at daycare, so I stopped stressing about it. Not worth a fight for us.

@Ra: No advice, just commiseration :( M threw 99% of her lunch onto the floor. We're still feeding her purées afterwards partly because she's still sensitive to solids and partly because we know she'll eat them. I don't get how she can gobble down some Gerber peas but want nothing to do with chicken nuggets!!

@Smurfette: yeah, I should have said 'most' kids. I know nothing applies to everyone! Pouches have long been our way to make sure he gets a veggie when we go out to eat or during my first trimester with #2 when I could hardly cook... he refused one last night out to eat :meh: So bummed!

I should have also added that my son is NOT one of those kids who eats lots of things and tries everything. There are lots of meals he only eats the string cheese, etc. But it's how we've done meals since he was little and he's slowly starting to get braver again about trying new things. It just takes the stress off of it for me. I have family members with kids who only eat X Y & Z beyond the toddler years because they sorta fell into making them what they would eat and not wanting to waste food.

@scg00387: It doesn't matter if we are eating the same food, R still won't touch it. Won't even try veggies at home.

Turkey sausage, chicken sausage, hot dogs, deli turkey meat, chicken nuggets(won't touch grilled chicken) are they only meats R will eat. Mac n cheese, pasta(not red sauce), diced fruit cups, rice, fries(sometimes), French toast, pancakes, cheese, grapes, sometimes blueberries, grill cheese, and sometimes roasted sweet potatoes. She does better with eating at day care. She eats the same stuff at home despite offering her new stuff.

She ate spaghetti at school on Monday but I gave it to her on Wed for dinner she wouldn't touch it. I finally just gave her a pouch right before bed cause I didn't want her going to bed on an empty stomach.

The main premise of the book, that I took away, was that you're in charge of the what & when of food being offered -- they're in charge of the how much & if. We don't use food as a reward, we don't "reward" him eating or comment on if he is eating or not. It just is what it is, and it eliminates the power struggle.

@Ra: Unfortunately, I think kids eat a lot better if everyone's eating the same thing - they want to eat whatever you're eating. Yep; like I said, I try to make sure there's something I know he will usually eat but otherwise that's it. There have been two times recently where he really tested it, asking for "peanut butter bread" and refusing to eat (once was dinner once was lunch). The dinner one REALLY scared me because we don't do a snack after that or anything but.... he slept just fine and ate a big breakfast in the morning :silly:

Do you just offer him whatever you cook and if he doesn't eat it then he just doesn't eat? Am I being too much of a push over?

Why do you put more effort into his food than your dinners? I really liked the book Fearless Feeding. We make the same dinner for everyone, I make sure LO has at least one side that he loves (or usually loves, at least) and let him eat what he wants. Our typical "sure bets" are string cheese, sweet potato slices, and fruit.

Kids won't starve themselves!

@Ra: LO currently likes beets. Grapes are her favorite but last week it was mango. Blueberries are usually a hit. She likes baked tofu (but only store- bought). Sigh. I got some really good local grape tomatoes she likes ...and she eats only stonyfield organic yogurt (the greek fruit on the bottom). Kid loves takeout baba ganoush. I am trying to relax about it all! We went through a watermelon phase too!

Help me with ideas before my child turns into a watermelon! At this point, his diet consists of 60% watermelon. He needs variation but he's so flipping picky!

The only foods he is guaranteed to eat are watermelon, most soups, crab/lobster (snob! :silly: ), sushi, eggs, and bowls of Raisin Bran. He will snack on Cheerios, ginger snaps, veggie straws, and cereal bars.

He used to LOVE broccoli but has been refusing it lately. Occasionally, he will eat chicken nuggets, peaches, cantaloupe, apple sauce pouches, roasted sweet potatoes, corn on the cob (but not in kernels), meatballs, pasta, and veggie muffins.

He doesn't like yogurt, cheese (unless in his eggs), smoothies, blueberries, strawberries, PB & J, most sandwiches, and most veggies.

This morning I made broccoli and cheese patties, zucchini "fries," and homemade meatballs fortified with spinach. I'm guessing they will all get thrown on the floor.

Are there any fool proof foods your toddler will eat? I really want to bottle wean him (he still takes two bottles a day) but I'm scared he won't get enough calories if I do.
