@Foodnerd81: I use a mini muffin tray, and this fills the 12 holes about halfway each. It's awesome because she doesn't slosh all the colors together. Just let them dry uncovered between uses and they'll be ready to use again.

Ingredients: 8T baking soda, 4T white vinegar, 1t corn syrup, 4 T cornstarch, food coloring (gel makes deeper colors when dry, but liquid works fine. My kids don't need professional level supplies :silly: )

Directions: Combine baking soda and vinegar and wait for the fizzing to stop. Add the corn syrup and corn starch and mix well until corn starch has dissolved. Pour into the wells of the muffin tin. Use a toothpick to stir in food coloring. Dry overnight.

@jhd: we just bought stamps, too, and she loves them!!

We also have a Melissa and Doug water pen/book that she loves, plus a play doh set that is always a hit. Stickers and tape are fun, and so are those felt balls you can find at craft stores. Though around here, they're usually used to throw around the room, not for putting in the box like they're intended to be ;)

Not exactly arts and crafts but there are 2 sensory activities that my 2 yr old loves - first, we have a stash of pom poms in all different shapes, sizes and textures. We cut a small hole in the top of a Tupperware container and she loves to push the poms through the hole - the hole just has to be small enough to give some resistance when pushing. I stole that from a preschool we visited recently. Second, we have a million pipe cleaners and she can spend forever "decorating" a pasta strainer - you basically just push the pipe cleaners through the holes. They both sound silly but they keep her occupied forever.

Our art cabinet has:
Glue sticks, construction paper, washable crayola paints/brushes, homemade watercolors (we use mini muffin tins, and they last so much longer than the shallow, store both ones), Water Wow books, googly eyes, foam stickers, washable glitter glue, pom poms, feathers and holographic duck tape.

We used the gold duck tape for "charm bracelets". You fold it in half, stick foam stickers (jewels) all over, then close with sticky Velcro. She loved that at around 2 and gave them to everyone she knew. We make homemade/edible finger paints in the summer, but they don't last long and attracted ants, so I'm reluctant to try that again. We like mixing shaving cream and paint in a rimmed baking sheet and then laying paper on top for prints or painting with it (sensory experience, marbled look). She loved using glue at that stage, so collage projects or googly eyes were a big hit. Dot markers were also a hit.

@Tanjowen: I cannot keep play doh out of lo's mouth! It's so weird because she uses it at daycare all the time and is totally good with it, but at home she thinks it's funny. And then a huge tantrum follows when I take it away. Fun times ;)

@Foodnerd81: I've thought about trying water colors, since it'd be less messy than other paint, so that's interesting that your lo doesn't get it yet!

She's very into markers these days too. And she loves to paint but I don't do that often because of the mess. On bath nights sometimes I sit her in the high chair in just a diaper and give her a plate of finger paint and let her paint all over herself.

I've tried doing more involved things and she just isn't really into it yet, at 2.5. And water colors confuse her- she keeps dipping in the water instead of the paints!

We have fun using playdough to make shapes, bubbles he can pop, bathtub finger painting and I also found those painting books that if you use water on brushes it colors the page - he loooooves that one!

Lo is 22 months loves to draw and loves sensory activities, but I'm in a rut with coming up with arts and crafts activities for her, and with a long weekend coming up I'd like to break out something new and exciting! I basically just leave crayons out for her, though in the summer we use chalk outside too. We've used some color-wonder markers and paint too.

What kinds of supplies do you keep on hand? Any favorite activities you'd like to share?
